Sony unveils slim high-resolution Edge competitor

Sony today unveiled the Clie PEG-T415, a $299 model that features a slim aluminum design, a high-resolution grayscale screen, and an enhanced infrared port for controlling audio/video equipment.

Question: The image that is next to the announcement on the main page:

Is this an actual picture, a reasonable facsimile, or a major mock-up? Why I ask is, for a monochrome device the screen appears to be "paper-white".

The image comes from

http://www.sonystyle.com/micros/clie/

and yes, it does say "Screen image simulated."

However, compared to the image of the PEG-S320 which is next to the new clie, the screen is much whiter.

It probably just says that because if you took a picture of the screen, it would look weird.

The iPaq 3150 always had a 'B&W' picture of the screen too, but it is the standard greyscale we're all accustomed to...so this one is definitely simluated, and will be just like the Edge's except higher in resolution.

If I didn't have such an investment in my Sprinboards(Memplug, Phone, Modem) I'd buy in it a sec...but not more than 2 hours ago, I ordered a new Edge...maybe HS, will reinvest in the Edge now? (Wishful thinking.)

Or at least a pin adapter!!!!

Infosync has the best images I've seen so far. If that's what the real screen is, I'm pawning my left foot and getting one.

Oh my! That is one incredible looking PDA!

I already have a Sony camera with the memory stick. And what fun I could have changing the channels whilst my husband has no idea...

I'm so tempted...

I'm a little confused why everyone immediately thinks the Edge is dead once this comes out?

IMHO, it provides validation to HS, that there is a market for an ultra-thin PDA. And that people really do want an Edge/T415 type PDA...myself in particular.

Now, I'd totally agree with the thought that HS's current Edge model needs an update...standard HotSync Pins/Interface so that keyboards, etc all work, and an SD slot would be req'd as well.

But I personall don't like the feel of the current Clie's, and prefer the Edge over the T415...although I have to admit I'm concerned over whether the Edge will make it to 2002.

This has advantages over Edge

I know HS would like to consider this unit "comparable" to the Edge, but it appears to be much better. I think it has two major advantages:
1) Memory Stick slot is built-in. No need for add-on "bulk" to expand. If the soon-to-market MS camera is a winner, this is definitely superior to, say, the Edge plus an Eyemodule.
2) The screen is supposed to be better than the one currently available on the Edge and the m500. It is supposedly the closest thing yet to paper-white.

I don't think this validates the Edge; it actually highlights the major problem with it: you cannot have Springboard and ultra-thin at the same time. You can have Memory Stick and ultra-thin, though. That alone may prove to be an "Edge killer."

It doesn't work to say "Edge/T415" as though they're essentially the same thing. The Edge doesn't have built-in expansion; the T415 does. You could say "m500/T415;" that's a much more realistic comparison. But then, this is VisorCentral, and the focus is more on Handspring.

Either way, that bulky Springboard backpack is a major reason that the Edge has been disappointing in the market...
