Question

I received the Magellan GPS last week. Overall I like it, It works just fine from within my jeep.

I like the way Map Companion works with the scrolling of the map while following my movement. I like having the road names on the map and for those it doesn't have it's easy enough to get them.

I tried the Nav Companion last night and while it works ok it leaves a lot to be desired. It sure would be nice it if was integrated with the Map. Setting waypoints by latitude and longitude is ok if you are there but what if I want to set a waypoint for the Subway that is 10 blocks away. How the heck am I going to know the lat and long for that. It would be nice if you could just tap the map and set a waypoint.

Also the plotting and navigation doesn't use the map. It told us to turn R 61 Degrees which was probably correct but what about the houses in the way. If it was integrated with the map it would be useful but as it is now it takes to much thought to determine what it means.

So, my question is - Am I just using the software wrong and if not is there software that will work on my Prism with the Magellan GPS that does these functions?

Bill,

Check out Mapopolis. The routing feature is almost there.

I like the way that the maps scroll and give info on MapCompanion best of all the software I've tried (with either my Magellan or my Geode.) But you're absolutely right, if they could just put both applications into one it would be almost perfect.

Thanks for the pointer to Mapopolis. Downloaded it plus the basic map for my county.

On the plus side the map is really nice and detailed.

On the minus side it's god-awful slow. Can't imagine what it would be like with the enhanced map. Also there doesn't seem to be any tie with the GPS. With the speed of drawing the map I don't think it would be able to keep up with the GPS anyway.

Magellan GPS

I am wondering if you can load topo maps into this. I currently use Solus Pro3 from Delorme with a Prism, but I am getting frustrated with the cord etc.
