Memplug SD/MMC

I just got my SD/MMC Memplug today, but I am a bit puzzled. My serial number doesn't seem to be the right format, because I can't register it on the pitech website, and I can't register the desktop side of gMovie with it. I can't download the VFS program from pitech because they require a serial number to download it, and mine doesn't work.

Also, does anyone have any idea how to set the alarm to the vibrate in the module? I can't find anything to switch to it.

Besides these couple of issues, I have loved it so far. I love all the room!

In order to register the MemPlug, you should use the Serial Number located on the backside of the MemPlug itself. The format appears to be different on the different models. My SM MemPlug was completely different from the CF version that I have now.

Once registered, you should then be able to download from PiTech those items that require a S/N.

Try registering again and then I would suggest Emailing PI. They are usually very responsive.

I did check the FAQ and the MemPlug Forum on Yahoo and found no complaints of other users having problems.

Ok. Good to know that all the models have different serial numbers. I did e-mail Pitech yesterday, and I hope they will update the website soon. As far as registerting the gMovie software, perhaps they could release some sort of patch. Until then, I joined the yahoo group for the Memplug and will download the software from there. Thanks for the reply GSR13

The serial number for the Gmoviemaker software comes on the CD, not on the Memplug. That was the way it worked with my SM Memplug.

I wasn't able to register my Memplug CF over the website, either, when I tried to get the full PiDirect and PiVFS programs. I had to email the serial number from the module to pitech support and get them to email the programs to me.

AHH! Great, thanks, I got it registered... I had misread the documentation...

Question Vibrate

Anybody with a SD/MMC module figure out how to turn on the vibrating alarm yet? I e-mailed PiTech but have gotten no response. Someone said that the Memory Stick Memplugs also had the vibrating alarm....... is this true?

MemPlug SD/MMC does not support SD content cards. From what I know, these include Palm's cards such as the dictionary, backup, and game cards. The MemPlug will run MMC or SD cards... just not the content cards Palm makes. I am pretty sure it also will not run I/O SD cards.

Question Which One?

Which of the "card" formats do you recommend? I've looked at the Pitech website and I see they have several different types. What would be the best one to consider purchasing? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get any answer on this yet? I am looking at getting this module, partly for this feature, and as you pointed out, I don't see anywhere on their site that mentions where to control this. I don't suppose it is added as a "sheet" in the Prefs icon (that is part of the Palm OS)? Thanks.

I have been in contact with the PiTech tech support through e-mail for the past week or so, and so far we have narrowed the problem down to my third-party alarm tones. I am not sure yet, I am going to try and delete my extra alarms and see if it will work then.

There is a program in the MemPlug's RAM called PiPrefs..... this program has a toggle option to turn the vibrate on and off. I'll keep you updated on whether or not we find a resolution.

If you already have one of the MemorySolutions, I would recommend sticking with the same format. For instance, if you have a Digital Camera or MP3 player that uses one type of media, then get the MemPlug that uses the same media.

If not, then it is really personal preference. I started with a SmartMedia MemPlug and just traded it to a user here for a CompactFlash MemPlug. He had several items that used SmartMedia and wanted to stay consistent. Having used both, CF is definately faster on my Deluxe but also sucks the batteries like mad. Of course, I could probably try different brand CF Cards to attempt to remedy this, but it is not a big deal.

If you think you might upgrade to a Palm, Inc device, why not go with the SD/MMC Memplug. Then you would already have Memory Solutions compatible with what Palm uses. Of course, the same can be said for Sony CLIE and the MS.

The only other major difference is the Vibrating Alarm included with the SD/MMC MemPlug and the MS MemPlug.

Give some thought to what type of electronic devices you might purchase in the future and the Media Types they use. Then buy the MemPlug with compatible Memory.

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with any of them. I have nothing but praise for PortableInnovation and the products they produce. Not to mention, the Support is awesome.

Which One?

So the Memplug Compact Flash is faster but drains the batteries more than the SD/MMC . Right? ( Compact Flash would be a bit cheaper and come in larger sizes too, I think)

Can someone with experience give me an idea of how much it drains the batteries? Normally I drain my Prism by 10 to 15 percent throughout a day. How much impact would the COmpact flash have if left in for the day?

I don't have any other devices that use cards yet and am also trying to figure out which way to go.

Question Same here..... which one?

Has VC or anyone done a comparison review between the 3 or 4 memory types factoring in speed, battery useage, compatibility, and ability to run as VFS?

Is a Handspring backup or Flash in 8 & 16MB models better or worse than CF\SD\MS memory adapters?

Fry's has 128MB of SD or CF for $38. Staples has a SD MemPlug for $29
