Angry

I just got SimCity and I'm trying to figure out whats going wrong. I'm trying to grid out the city with a bunch of residentials in one area (for example) but I can't seem to get it so they line up next to each other. Would anyone know why this is?

if I want it to be like (the r's representing residential squares)

RRRR

it will be like
. R
R R
. R

When I try to insert directly next to it, it just beeps at me and I have to keep taping wildly and finally it results in the above diagram. anyone have this problem and/or solution?

I'm Visor Deluxe with v.1.5.

I don't know if this is the answer to your problem, but it sounds related to the proglem I used to have: I couldn't make a straight line on the screen (e.g. elec. line) without Write Rights on the screen. That solved my problem (but made it hard to see the game!)

Hmmm...I just ran my Simcity program (b/c I posted without trying it last time) and it doesn't let me line 'em up either. I get a lot of beeping...

However, I don't have a Writeright on my screen either...I'm going to put one on and test it...

Okay, the Writerights don't seem to help with the lining up zones issue and the manual says to place them "adjacent" to one another. They seem to "want" to place themselves in an uneven brick-like pattern.

Maybe our digitizers are off...

i thought that might be the case, but I tried adjusting it several times.

it seems like a problem with the program itself only in the fact that I am able to lay road and everything else okay, but not zones, police and the like.

if you look at the screen shot it shows them lined up properly.

Yeah, they are definitely on line in the screen shot.

Also, I found more success in placing a zone with more of a small circular motion instead of a tap--not that it went where I wanted it to or anything.

Wonder if anyone else has noticed this...maybe we are tapping wrong?

I have no problems getting them to line up. In fact, I have several chunk or RES that are 3x2 or 4x2.

Hmmm.... sounds really odd.

I know you have to point the stylus on the corner of the square (Residential, Commerce, etc.) , but that's my only hiccup.

I had a writeright , and it worked fine.

Do you have any hacks that may be intefearing?

nope, it was a straight install. I have a Visor Deluxe. Maybe its a 3.0 to 3.5 problem? Maybe the color support in 1.5 is interfering and I need an older version?

What do you mean? You point at the corner of where you want the square to go? I've been tapping at the center of where I want the square to go...

That's why then. To build a residential (and others) block, you click where you want to place the block, the block orients itself from the top left corner of where you click
_______
X 0 0
0 0 0
0 0 0
-------

I click where the X is and the block orients itself like the diagram. That sounds like your problem.

It becomes very easy to line things up when you remember to count the tiles on the background. There are 3 rows of 3 tiles in a res, comm, or ind building. You can see the ground tiling so just count the tiles.

I do wish though that there was a ghost feature. When I built my airport and seaport I did not know how big they would be so I sort of had to top randomly to build it. It's not lined up precisely where I wanted it, but no biggie. I would really like to see a help file built into the game. There are questions that I still don't know the answers to. Maybe some of you can help me out?

1) Why cant you build a double wide road, powerlines or mass transit across water?

2) What exactly does the positive and negative RCI mean? When it's positive what should I be doing and vice versa?

its that simple! jeesh! everything works okay now. time to start a new city.

I do miss the ghost feature of later versions of sim city and also the ability to select a huge area and make it residential.

I can't do a double lane bridge either. what about seperating the bridges by a few tiles? I am able to build powerlines and mass transit across water, just not with double squares..

(apologetic grin)
Thanks for everyone's help! neps, evidently you and I just totally missed the boat. I looked throughout the manual and didn't see this part--I just assumed you'd tap in the middle.

Anyway, working fine now.

On the RCI, my understanding (and you know to take THAT with a grain of salt) is that if the bar is up, you need to build more of that particular zone (positive). If it is negative, there is no need for more...

well I was always told it was better to ask a question. at least I wasn't the only one with this problem!

my understanding on the RCI is the same.

Yeah, I'm glad you did, although I'm sitting here playing SimCity instead of working...
