Question

After reading the news article about the Psion IR modem, I thought I'd check out where I could buy one. Well, on the Psion website, it sells for the advertised $129...

BUT, at buy.com and amazon.com, they list it at $172 and $199, respectively. What's the deal??

At handago.com they advertise a price of 125. It's lower than the claimed price by Psion so I'm not going to complain. However it is suspicious that we have four different prices from four different sources(psion 129.99, amazon.com 199.99, buy.com 175, handago 125). I havn't taken the time to check the other sites or stores, but I bet there are some different prices out there.

Question

My .02 cents says that Psion recently discovered that their IrDA modem would connect to any handheld with an IR port. The prices on Amazon/Buycomp/Dell GigaBuys probably reflect the price of the "Psion only" modem.
With the advent of several flavors of modems for the Visor (and others), Psion would need/needed to lower their price to be competitive. They also state on their site that it is a "new" lower price.
I would expect to see the big sites have their prices lower in the near future.

Amazon's price is now $129. Kind of makes you feel sorry for the guy that wrote the first review - he mentions the high price.

It looks like an interesting bit of hardware though.

$179 was the original price and it has been just dropped to $129, they probably made that press release to gather attention to the new price as well as open it up to others in hte market. I know someone who was using the modem with his Palm V since the day the modem came out.

Angry

Apart from the wacky pricing, has anyone actually bought and used one? I received mine today, and have yet to get it working. So whether it's $150 or $50, a paperweight is a paperweight is a paperweight...

I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but did you download the IR update from palm? Somewhere on Psion's site they list how to set up the Visor from use with the modem.

Yup, I followed the instructions on the Psion website to the letter -- and I'm still waiting for their tech support to reply.

Has anyone had any luck using the Travel Modem? I think all I need is a proper modem initialization string, cos the IR part seems to work.
