 Mac geezers unite

I'm working on an OS 7 machine that is locking whenever I quit a program. Any ideas?

did you try to ...
-rebuild the desktop?
-run diagnostic software (Norton Disk Doctor, TechTool, etc.)?
-reinstall the system software?
-smack it with a mallet and yell, "Bad doggie!"?

did you install something just before this started happening?

tried, but I can't boot to cd. holding 'c' on boot does nothing
