Thumbs up

As I sat in class today, trying to keep up with the monotonous English professor's discussion of Puritan Literature and its impact, I began to realize that I just don't write Graffiti as fast as I should (though I am getting better). And I began to daydream about the wonderful Stowaway Keyboard that I am dying to buy... and low and behold I got an email for their mailing list not long ago! Here it is:

Thank you for inquiring about the Stowaway foldable keyboard. We have
been overwhelmed with the wonderful response that we have received from
the press, the industry and consumers who have seen or heard about our
exciting new products. We have just returned from showing the keyboard at
the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and it was a big success.
We received three awards (Best of Show, Innovations Design and a Workstyle
Award http://www.cesweb.org/innovations/docs/comp.hard.html) and a
countless number of visitors. The trade show reinforced the fact that our
keyboard design is a solution that will make your handheld device even
more productive.

We are pleased to inform you that Palm Computing will be branding the
keyboard for Palm products under their name "Palm Portable Keyboard", and
they will be responsible for announcing, marketing and distributing the
product. They are expected to announce availability very soon, and we
plan to send another email reminder when they make their announcement.

In addition, the Stowaway for the Handspring Visor will be available by
mid-February and will be distributed on a worldwide basis by Targus. If
you have any questions, Targus can be reached at http://www.targus.com

We thank you for your interest and support. Please check our website, http://www.thinkoutside.com to view the latest reviews and for updates on
availability.

Best Regards,

Think Outside Marketing Department

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RECEIVE FURTHER UPDATES, PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS
EMAIL WITH "DELETE" IN THE SUBJECT MATTER.

Cool

Its going to be AWESOME. I think thats the only word for it. Faster note taking, more detailed notes, backup of notes on the computer (and hardcopy if needed), easier to do context searches in the notes, legiable notes, etc.etc.etc.. Not only that, but having the ability to not have to concentrate on writing down notes will allow me to actually absorb more of what is being said in class so IDEALLY I will see a reduced amount of study time.

And then there is the entire paper writing perspective where I will have a LOT more portibility (write papers at school, libraries, restaurants, etc..) than using my home computer.

Now I just need to figure out what programs would be best suited for note taking. I was thinking a new memo for each class/each day. Considering the 4000 character limit, that would be between 600 and 1000 words (Which is more than I have ever written for a class in a day).. however, ongoing discussion would be divided up between a lot of memos.. so I will probably need to get something that allows me to concentrate at the chapter level for notes that have unlimited length, easy to navigate interface (if completely by the keyboard, that would be excellent) and can be interfaced with Microsoft Word (TXT or RTF format would work..) .. Also, the ability to draw objects in the visor would also be a plus along with the ability to do tables .. have you looked into this yet?

I've written an entire eBook about more capable writing programs than notepad, called "Writing On Your Palm." I invite you to check out the Writing On Your Palm website at http://www.jeffkirvin.com/writingonyourpalm/ , and if you like what you see there, buy the eBook at Handango (there's a link straight to it at http://www.jeffkirvin.com/writingon...lm/palmwrit.htm ).

Talking

I plan to use beam books if I can get a couple of friends to go along with it. We can use one book for each class, one page for each person's daily notes and if we IrSync periodically then we'll be able to refer to more than just our own notes.

Anybody else using beam books? It seems that if they allowed a web-based sync the application would really take off.

An unsolicited endorsement...I stumbled acorss Jeff's page and ended up buying his book, since writing is one of my plans for my Visor. I found it to be comprehensive and enjoyable to read. I strongly recommend it for anyone who would like a good background on palm computing and the options available for making the most out of your PDA. Good work Jeff!
