Question

I got my Nokia 8290 (Voicestream) to work with my Visor Platinum! I was wondering what I should set the connect speed to. I've tried 14.4Kbps and it works fine. I don't know if it transfers at that rate or anywhere near it. I read somewhere that the phone can currently only transmit at 9,600bps but 14.4Kbps is currently in the works (firmware upgrade). Is this true?

Could you give me some advice. I have a visor prism and I just bought the same phone you have from voice stream. Could you absolutely spoon feed me through the process. What isp are you using? Do I need to download any software to allow the ir link to work? Are you using Blazer to surf? I would greatly appreciate it. I know about the link for visor deluxe but it is confusing and Im not sure I need alot of that software based on the prism's more advanced OS. Thanks so much.

Talking Open Wide

If you want it spoon fed here you go. Here's what I did:

Visor Platinum (OS 3.5.2H1) and Nokia 8290 (Firmware v5.06) using
Voicestream:

1. Go to Pref and go to 'Connection'.
2. Tap 'New'
3. For 'Name' write something (ex: Nokia 8290)
Connection Method: IrCOMM to Modem
Dialing: TouchTone
Volume: Low (or whatever)
4. Tap 'Details'.
5. Speed: 14,400 bps (I haven't tried anything higher yet)
6. Go to 'Network' in Pref and select your service or create a new one.
7. For 'Connection' select the name you made for step 3 (ex Nokia 8290)
8. On the phone, hit Menu\9, to activate the IR. Point it at the IR on the
Visor.
9. Tap 'Connect' and enjoy.

I didn't need to buy any software and I didn't have to use the DataStream service either. I'm not too sure about the speed setting. You could try it higher but I don't know if it will make a difference. That's why I posted that question. =) I dial into my schools computer to get access. If you need more help, just post your question here and maybe I can help you out.

I use the Eudora Internet Suite for my email and "web browsing". I have yet to try any other program till I get the connection question answered. You can find it at PalmGear.com. Good Luck!

Thanks for spoon feeding me! I'm convinced I have everything setup but I get an authentication failure after I put in my password. Ultimately, I do not have dialup access on my ISP (my ethernet access does not include dialup... dialup will cost another 15.99 per moonth). Do you know of any free or relatively inexpensive ISP meant for dialup access with a pda? Let me know because Im getting very close to surfing wirelessly.
Thanks again,
Greg.

Worldnet

I am setting up the exact same system with a VisorDeluxe. I am using a friend's dialup account, but if that is a problem, I may sign up for AT&T Worldnet. It is like $5 a month for 150 hours, which should be plenty for wireless browsing.

Just do a search in the forums for free isp. There are a few threads that explain how to get Juno and others to work.
