Question Prism & Deluxe Co-existence

I'm now the happy owner of a Visor Prism (thanks to results sharing for an aerospace company, one of the few industries that did great last year, for various reasons). I have a few questions:

1) I still have a Visor Deluxe. I'd like to pass that one onto my wife so she can use it. I'm relatively certain that the Palm Desktop can handle multiple users. However I'm not sure about the cradle situation.

Can the Deluxe use a Prism cradle and just not use the charging pins? Can a Prism use a Deluxe cradle and get it's charge from someplace else? (I have a travel recharger that I bought at the same time.) I think they ought to be able to coexist in some fashion because my GoType keyboard is supposed to be able to function as a cradle for both, but I'd like some field experience.

2) I'm having trouble beaming to/from the Deluxe/Prism. Are there any caveats? I did once manage to beam from the Deluxe to an Edge but we had to put the two PDA's RIGHT next to each other. Then it worked. So far I've not been able to beam anything from the Deluxe to the Prism, or vice versa (just tinkering with address book entries, etc.)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Regards,
Remillard

Prism and Deluxe

I am in the same situation. My wife has my old deluxe and I have the Prism. I solved the hot synch problem by getting rid of the cradles and going to a hot synch cable that fits both units fine. As far as I know the two cradles are not interchangable.

I have not had any problems beaming data between my the two units. Do you have beam receive enabled on both units? It is possible that one of the units has a damaged IR port. You can download a program that checks IR signal strength for one of the software sites.

I had another idea, is it possible to put the two cradles on the same computer? I have another USB port I could use. I don't know if that will confuse Win2K too much though .

You can do two cradles if you want but its not necessary. For some time we only had one computer in my house, with a prism, a Dx, and an edge. The edge of course had its own cradle, but I used the Prism cradle for the other two. When you set the Dx into the cradle it will seem to not fit right, like it sits too high. But as long as you give it a little touch it will work.

Lightbulb quick solution

Another idea is to get a data switcher box. You can buy them at Fry's. If you can deal without having any good customer help.
I have a Visor Deluxe and also a PalmIIIX. Get a dual A and B switcher box and both units can use the same desktop program.
You just have to specify users under the preference menu in the hotsync program on the desktop. When you want to hotsync with one. simply switch box to either A or B, whichever you are using at the moment. The program will know which unit is hotsyncing.
That's it. The box is about $12 bucks and I use it all the time.

Good luck

That would work IF one was using serial cradles AND wanted to spend an extra 12 bucks.

dkouz is correct. One cradle is fine as long as it is the Prism Cradle you are using. The Deluxe is a little loose, but it will work fine. I had the same setup completely before getting rid of my Prism.

I now have a CLIE and a Deluxe on the same PC with no problems at all. Two cradles will work as well, but it is pointless in your situation.

As for the Beaming issue, I had the same problem beaming between the Deluxe and Prism. I actually found that it worked much better to keep them about 8 to 10 inches apart, otherwise I kept getting errors.

After my daughter crashed my DL, I got myself a Prism. At one of my workplaces I could only use a serial cradle, which I had for the DL. I just cut a slot in the plastic to make the prism fit on the connector, and it works fine (bar charging).

So, there are plenty of options to get the Prism and the DL to co-exist.

One thing though: When I got the Prism, I used the back-up module to load all my DL stuff onto the Prism, as I hadn't done a hotsync recently, but did manage to get a backup to work. This initially caused a fatal error, probably because the DL had a software OS patch, which was interfering with the 3.5 OS on the Prism.

By redoing the restore backup, followed by a warm reset, the Prism started up fine (bypassing the patch). After the next hotsync I deleted the patch.

Hi,

I'm also going to upgrade from a Deluxe to a Prism and wanted to use the backup module for transferring the files to the Prism as well...
I just posted a new thread about this....
What do you mean by this Palm OS software patch? I also installed a patch from Handspring once and my Palm version on the deLuxe is 3.1H3M. If you advise to uninstall this patch first, I wonder how you can do that? Maybe first should get rid of the patch, perform a Hotsync, perform a backup on the deLuxe and then insert the module on the Prism and restore the backup?
