While both the Handy GPS and the Geode look interesting, I was wondering if anybody had heard anything from DeLorme about putting together a GPS system for the Visor?

They have their Earthmate unit with cables for the Palm III's, V's, and WinCE's; but nothing yet (and no word on their's or Handspring's website) for the Visor.

I've used their Topo USA software on my PC, and I'd really love to be able to integrate that Visor.

So, anybody got some good news for me?

Cool

I have the Earthmate gps,
I Emailed Delorme to see if they have a cable for the Visor ,

They sent back a note to me saying they were just starting to look and see if they wanted to make on for it.

I am using a Delorme Earthmate GPS receiver with the Visor. I am using an external homebrew TTL/RS-232 adapter that runs off the 12v of the car (not very pretty or small). Someone mentioned that Mark/Space was building a
serial cable to work with the Visor but its not clear that it will work with the Earthmate GPS (no mention of HOW they are going to power the TTL/RS232 chips).

I have a relative in Tech Suport at DeLorme. They are working on a cable (DB9-Visor) to attach to the Visor rather than a Sprinboard module. This will allow the use of more than one type of GPS with your Visor. They hope to have it in retail by this Fall.

Question

For about the same cost of an Earthmate, why don't you consider a Magellan GPS315 setup like this one?
<A HREF="http://"http://wac.addr.com/ee/visor/visor.html"" TARGET=_blank>http://wac.addr.com/ee/visor/visor.html</A>
I can supply the Hotsync-only portion at cost for $10 shipped, or slightly more for a complete cable.

This version only works with the Magellan GPS315, but I'm working on a new design to try out on a Garmin.

One benefit of the Magellan setup is you can power the handheld GPS off the lighter socket for long drives, and the Visor will run for at least 6 hours continuously on a set of 700mAh NiMH batteries. Satellite fixes take no more than 3 minutes. Delorme's maps are quite good, although some downloaded maps refuse to work or even Hotsync (problem with Solus Pro 1.5, I think).

Thumbs up

I have one of wac's hotsync connectors for the Visor. Took me about 1/2 hour to solder the 3 wires to his connector and to a male DB9 on the other end so my GPS 315 would connect to it. Works great! I had a moving map on the way to work this morning! Like wac, I have also seen some problems with Solus Pro 1.5. Hopefully, 2.0 fixes these...
