I have the Visor delux and usually can synch with no problems, both with a PC laptop at work and my iMac at home. Now, with the iMac I get erratic behavior. Sometimes it works, sometimes it starts to synch, but stops at the identifying user stage. I suspect the cradle, but even holding the Visor and pushing it onto the cradle doesn't seem to work. Any clues anyone?

Try a soft reset of the Visor. It's known to solve many syncing problems.

Hey, I've done that many times. Reset the Visor, restart the iMac. there isn't any pattern to the problem.
thanks for the ideas anyway.

Talking

Do your homework. What version of software are you running?
Are you using the same cradle on both computers? Do you have two separate cradles?

If your OS supports it, Try the latest Mac Palm Desktop software from the handspring site. Make sure you back up your data and do a proper uninstall before installing new software.

What homework are you talking about? Is that your standard reply? Not very helpful, I would say.
But....I have a serial cradle for the IBM laptop which works fine. I have a USB cradle for the iMac which runs MacOS 9.0 and gives me lots of problems. It works..it won't work. How do you figure that out? Reinstall the Palm Desktop. Restart, Reset, etc etc etc.
But since it seems that I won't get much useful advice here I won't bother coming back.
Adios ***hole

You are not the only one...

You are not the only one to have this syncing problem. The same thing happens to me: sometimes in syncs when I push the button (not often) and sometimes I have to soft reset 3-4 times to get it to sync. There was a recent thread (from last week) about this problem. I intend to send Handspring an email to see if they know what's going on. Actually, I think that I will do it right now. I will let you know if I find anything out - they usually respond within 24 hours. Last time I emailed them, though, they said to come here to look for answers (nice).

Out of curiosity - are you using a 8mb flash module? I don't remember having sync problems until after I started using the flash module.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks for the reply. No I don't have the 8 mb module. But the Visor is pretty well loaded. I have taken off some apps installed recently, but that doesn't make any difference. I just wonder if it is the USB cradle or a mismatch with the iMac. Today I synched at work with the serial cradle with no problems, but tonight it was the same hassle. I have increased the memory allocation to Hot synch but no luck. Very strange.
Yes, please let me know what Handspring say.

Thumbs up Just talked to Handspring

I just talked to Handspring Tech Support on the phone - for some reason the email on their site wasn't working. Here's what the tech told me:

The usual cause of this problem is static electricity. He said to move the cradle away from the computer and to make sure the computer (and cradle) are grounded properly to avoid the possible static shock. I had already tried this - I moved my cradle off my desk and on a wood cabinet by my PC, so this was most likely not my problem.

Another cause could be third-party software creating the problem. He said to remove all of the third-party software that was installed and see if it corrects the problem. I had also already tried this, so this wasn't my problem either. (I also had problems syncing when I first got my Visor; it has just gotten worse over time.)

I told him that I sync my husband's Visor Dlx on the same cradle and there have been no problems with his. I have also tried switching cradles (we have two) and that didn't correct the problem either.

Bottom line - a replacement unit is on the way. He said that he knew of no other possibilities. I must say that I am surprised and pleased with Handspring's support. I certainly didn't expect them to send me a replacement unit. I also must say that I am a little apprehensive-I hope I can get all of my applications and data on a new unit without losing anything.

Well, I hope this helps you out. If you still can't get your Visor to Hotsync correctly, I would call tech support and see if they will send you a replacement.

For what it's worth, it sounds to me like BobMcD has either a bad cradle or something flaky in the iMac (I have no experience with Mac's so I can't really help here). One option would be to try the serial cradle on the iMac (is that possible?) and see if it works.

Unfortunately for MoKoni, I think it's a bad Visor . Since you're able to sync the hubby's, that pretty much rules out the bad cradle. I'm surprised that you haven't just taken his Visor yet (Gods knows my wife would have).

Talking

Do you think that I haven't thought of that? Many, many times. Especially considering that he has a deluxe (I have the "junior" model) and he has used his maybe ten times in the past six months. Believe me... I have looked at it several times with evil intent.

Hopefully, though, this new one will work like a charm. I am actually excited about getting it - I feel like a kid.

I do have a question - when I get the new Visor, would it be a good idea for me to put all of my software on my 8mb flash module (including a copy of all of the data) and then just move it on to the new Visor? I am a litte concerned about being able to get everything back on there. What would be the best way to do it?

Thanks!

Thanks for all those tips. I'll get to work to try them out. I can't think its the Visor since I can synch with the serial cradle and my office laptop (Windows)
Its either the cradle or some software, and I suspect the latter. I think I'll take off one app at a time and try to synch to see if that works.
Back later....
Cheers
