I can still remember the name of every GIJoe toy I had when I was little.
I'd really rather remember phone numbers, addresses, appontments, people's names, what I had for lunch yesterday ...

Since most of our society is still quite low-tech (partic. the archaic legal sys.), it's a very big deal.
I know someone who was recently kidnapped by the NYPD. They tried to frame him (and so far, have succeeded) as an "EDP" ("Emotionally Disturbed Person"). This is the "catch-all" phrase they "level against you" when they know you've really done nothing wrong, and there's nothing they can charge you with -- but they want to "show you who's boss."
What is "emotionally disturbed"? Is it different from being "mentally disturbed"? "Intellectually disturbed"? "Poetically disturbed"? "Artistically disturbed"? "Digitally disturbed"?
And ... disturbed -- how? Did YOU, the NYPD disturb someone? (Perish the thought!) Are you the disturb-er or the disturb-ee?
If you're NOT "emotionally disturbed" (as Hitler reportedly wasn't when performing genocide) ... are you "okay"? I'm okay / Hitler's okay?
This is similar to the "Disorderly Conduct" charge. What's that? What am I, a slob, so I'm dis-orderly? Do I walk funny? How is my conduct disorderly? "We SAY SO, that's how!" the cops chuckle.
It gets worse. The guy was taken to a local hosp. (because a "real crime" would require "real charges" -- and the cops knew they didn't have that) and simply "declared" the guy was an "EDP."
You'd think at a "real hosp." w/ "real MDs, etc." the farce would instantly fall apart.
No.
The MDs basically take their cue from cops (none of whom have graduated college, else they'd be detectives, lieutenants, etc., right?) and "view you through that lens" -- trying to affirm whatever fabrication the cops have come up w/ rather than stepping in and saying: "You scum have made a grave error here, and we're all about to be sued up the wazoo."
The guy had a Palm Pilot -- but it, and everything else on him was confiscated. Since he was "dumb enough to shout objections to being kidnapped, his treatment, and that he wanted a lawyer" -- they DRUGGED him, so he was basically incoherent for the next 24 hrs.
Not only was he USED TO "not bothering to remem. phone numbers" -- but now it was almost impossible. (As fate would have it, he lives alone, is not close to his family, and was between girlfriends at the time -- so only knew WORK NUMBERS by rote, and they "didn't count" as next-of-kin "contacts," etc.)
It gets worse.
THIS IS ONE OF THE INDICATORS THEY USED AGAINST HIM TO DECLARE THAT HE WAS MENTALLY ILL.
This is your gov't. at work.
In 2001.
TODAY.
God as my witnesss, I know this guy would not only not be lying about this -- but there's also a pretty good trail of proof of his story, from the very beginning.
He's trying to get court action on this, but almost no one in the city, state & fed. gov. is willing to even LOOK AT the evidence, forget about prosecuting on his behalf.
Contrary to popular belief (I know I believed it), it's hard to get a lawyer on this kind of case -- they know the system is so skewed in the cops' favor (and the NYPD knows it, too).
And it's just much easier to get cold hard cash chasing ambulances w/accident victims in it.

Given that members of the NYPD are willing to beat people near to death, empty several clips at an unarmed man, ignore gang rape occuring in front of them, and be acquitted in all cases, I'm not surprised in the least.

let's get philosophical

I recently read an article in the German heise.de about Michel Serres, a French philosopher. The gist of what he had to say in one interview was that new tech like computers (and thus PDAs) don't make us stupid; rather, they free our minds to do other things, and so enhance our ability to function. Here is a snippet, badly translated from the German by www.teletranslator.com:

quote:
Every time when an organ - or a function - frees itself from an old obligation, it invents something new. When the paw or hand is freed from the function of support of walking, it changes; it becomes the grasping organ and, finally reforms as a tool; when the mouth, chin or snout are freed by the newly upright, erect posture of the body and thus the vital necessity of the grasping of food, they begin to speak. The memory has freed itself three times in history: with the birth of the writing, by the discovery of the letterpress printing and now by the computer. One can thinkg that the birth of writing owes thanks to the invention of geometry? Who is able to say what the experimentale sciences owe to the letterpress printing? To which innovations the third "forgetting" will lead? And to which new availability our language raises their(her) reincarnation? - Michel Serres in "The Five Senses"

Didn't know that your Visor was an important evolutionary step as the invention of writing, did you?

The original article "Der Pirat des Wissens ist ein guter Pirat" is at Heise Online, downloadable as DOC direct from the site, or translatable through Babelfish or Teletranslator (mentioned above). Interesting slant on the usage of copyrights in there, as hinted by the title "The Knowledge Pirate is a Good Pirate."

Very interesting! Makes Einstein's quote about not remebering things he could look up seem timid!

Hmm.. What will I use the extra brainpower for... I know! Learning about PDAs!!! (wait a sec...)

When one further considers Hawkins educational background and real ambitions, what else would you expect?

Is he ever going to get around to doing that research? I thought he said that being a PDA exec was something that happened to him, and that he wanted out eventually... (400, woo hoo!)

I seem to remember still hearing that in recent interviews, but I've no idea when/if it'll happen. Maybe he'll start taking night classes after a color Edge is released.

I've always felt this -- but people you know (and you try to talk up PDAs to) want "proof": "Really? What 'other things' has your PDA freed you to do?" They always couch it *personally* to make you look bad, ever notice that? Like if you say: "PDAs can help you track stocks and make a ton of money!" they say: "Has yours made you rich?" And if you can't say: "Yes, more than Bill Gates!" they act as if it's "proof PDAs are a waste of time & money," or the like.

It's sad how "non-believers / low-techers" can just completely negate, say, what's written in this thread -- until there's a huge critical mass of people who are cognizant of these things. Meanwhile, they can lock you away and write you off as a lunatic who "doesn't know the RIGHT phone #s that control his/her life/freedom -- but can quote some arcane article by Michel Serres; see? We told you he was crazy!"

You'd think in 2001, no one could "pull a Marconi" on you anymore. (His friends and/or relatives tried to have him committed when he tried to explain that radio waves could go through walls!)

Cool Jeez!

Jeez bkbk, I have to wonder why you put up with the injustice in New York!!

My theory, is that as long as the "doodad" you are using is not related directly to Microsoft, it is most likely solving a problem. If it is by Microsoft, chances are, you're too busy messing with that sodding paper clip rather than typing your document. AUGGH! I HATE THAT! THE HUMANITY!!!!

Umm..... but I think PDA's (palms) have freed are minds of the stupid things (except in New York) , and have led us a transition into a more simple life of wanting nothing more than Springboard modules....

1) I'm waiting out the current mayor's regime (< 1 yr. now) -- then if things don't go back to the way they were, I'll seriously consider moving.
(I lived in other places, pre-Web, and found out how spoiled we are here having 24/7 everything, tons of junk available all over, etc. It was tough. But maybe post-Web I'll be able to cope.)
2) Too funny!
