I can't believe I didn't get to be garbage *or* It's good to be back

Anyone miss me? I've been fighting off the cops who have surrounded my house, kidnapped my wife and put her into an insane asylum, shot my puppies (after putting them into a barrel - the bastards), revoked my licence, ...

Actually, the licence revoking comment is true - but I'll get to that later. This is probably going to be hell to read, but here we go.

Regarding my computer upgrade, I've decided to purchase a duron 1GHz, Iwill KD266 (both of which I have), antec ks788, and some RAM (SDRAM) (which I don't). I'm kicking around the idea of overclocking. Anyone have recommendations for RAM? Looks like the mobo is going to allow for upping the FSB and voltage. The case is a desktop. It's a larger footprint, but the monitor can sit on it (and I'm looking at getting one of those desks where the monitor is buried in the deskt, in which case the printer can sit on it).

I finished my first class at the University of Phoenix by some miracle. I've had about as much time to post there as I have to post here. My group probably wasn't impressed, but I did what I could given my level of understanding checking in every other day.

The family's heading to Indiana on Friday to see my dad. That's going to be fun, though I'd like to stay longer. My wife isn't excited about the trip. I think it has something to do with the piss-poor relationship she has with her own father, but I didn't marry her to fix her problems.

Speaking of the missus (and getting back to the licence comment), I got pulled over for having a head-light out. Couldn't find proof of insurance in my car, so I got a ticket. I took the ticket and proof of insurance to the states attorney (who usually cancels the ticket), who also wanted a fax from my insurance company saying I was indeed covered. Unfortunately, I had missed my payment, so the States Attorney didn't get their fax. The insurance company mailed a letter to that effect (I had left a message with my agent and assumed it had been taken care of), but my wife set it up and forgot to tell me about it. Couple of weeks later, the sheriff shows up with a warrent for my arrest because I failed to appear in court per the ticket. He doesn't take me in, just tells me to get to the States Attorneys office first thing next morning - where I find out about not being insured and the letter, etc. So, I get escorted over to the sheriff's office where I get to post $200 bond with a court appearance the next morning. I tell the judge what happened and he gives me a $36 fine and takes my licence for 30 days (I was able to get a work release - and my employer was more than generous in stating the times I needed to be able to drive, so life wasn't that bad). My thirty days is up today, so I get licenced Tuesday (the DMV is closed tomorrow). The worst part: having no picture id. I had to use my passport, birth certificate, Social Security Card, and a copy of the court order authorizing my name change (another long story) in order to get a fishing license, and the same so I could buy a friend a pack of cigarettes.

We also had the pleasure of hosting Animal Control for an hour last week. A lady called the cops because our dogs were laying outside. They had water, the are able to get into the cool garage whenever they feel like it, they have shade in the yard, etc., but, apparently, the lady felt that was animal abuse and implored the police to arrest us. After some 'off-the record' questions, I found out the lady has a miniture poodle she keeps in a cat kennel constantly so little Fluffy feels 'safe.' After a cold beverage and some small talk, the officer called dispatch to let them know that they can ignore any more calls they get about our dogs. It probably helped that I pointed out that both dogs are able to get out of the fence if they so choose, plus their good temperment (esp. withh strangers - human and canine), good obedience, and the fact that one of them can turn on the water to the hose outside. My dog also walks beside me w/o a leash (the law states the animal has to be 'under control' - and the officer confirmed that control may only be verbal). I asked if he would like to talk to the neighbors and/or my friend/family.

At any rate, it's good to be back.

Couldn't you of been issued a state photo id during the time you had your license revoked?

I had a hard time trying to decide whether or not to start a new thread or just post this in the ramble. I came to the conclusion that all is inanity.

Considering that the fee to get licenced in the first place is $7, we don't get much in the way of freebies here in SD (real estate is cheap here, too - my house cost $30k). I could've spent ~$5 for a photo id for the thirty days, but I didn't think it'd be worth it. I think I may have been able to have them write 'revoked' on the licence and clip off a corner, but I didn't think of that at the time, either.

Read a decent fiction book (Domain by Steve Alten) about doomsday with a twist: it was regarding Mayan doomsday prohecies (and aliens). Reading the History of the Lord of the Rings currently. I'd have to go back over my recent reading to tell you about anything interesting. Can't think of anything off the top of my head.

Don't you think it would be much more interesting to just disappear (a la Philip Taylor Kramer)?

I would want it to be known if I wasn't patronizing this site for a reason (a la your relationship w/ PDABuzz).

Didn't you hear? The Cult of Personality is apparently history. The boards might actually be interesting again after the people who are supposedly leaving in protest actually go away.

Is that a tone of unrequited love I hear?

I know that feeling.. first time I was in the US I was about 25 so well above the legal drinking age (heck I had been legally drinking beer for 9 year back home, but that is another discussion).
I went to the local liquer store (Or as they call it down under: 'bottle shop') and the guy behind the counter demanded 'California picture ID' I tried to reason with him and explain him that it is pretty hard to get CPID if you are just a tourist...but he kept asking for CPID... I showed him my dutch drivers license, no luck, needed CPID...
So I drove back to my hotel (luckily just down the road) got my passport, which is official ID anywhere in the world... but still no luck...
My co-worker who is only a couple of years older was able to buy some beer with his german passport, but my dutch one was not good enough for some reason...
So I gave my co-worker my beer and the money, right in front of the clerk, tellling him to buy the beer for me. What I understand from american law is that the shopkeeper is just as guilty if he knows he sells to a person if that person is going to sell it/give it to a minor.
Anyway that was the most trouble I ever had to do to get a beer... and in the end I ended up with weak flavourless american beer... I still wonder if it was worth the trouble..

Probably not. You should've gotten some Amber Bock.

There's your problem. You went to California. I don't think the GoodBeer revolution migrated any lower than San Francisco until relatively recently.

That is true, but it sounds like the guy was pretty sure you weren't a minor and was just being an @$$.

No. American megabrews are the reason for the old Eric Idle joke about making love in a canoe. In San Francisco, you'd have probably been able to pick up some Anchor. If this was in the 80s, Sierra Nevada would have been around as well. Sierra Nevada is generally a beginner hophead's beer, though (some PacNorthWesters probably consider it 'well-balanced').

1. They probably didn't make it back then.
2. Amber Bock _is_ weak flavourless american beer.
Try a real german bock (or better a good abbey doppel) and you'll see what real beer tastes like.

Sounds like your clerk had been sampling his own wares.

I hate it when stupid people make us seem mean (or stupid for that matter) to visitors. It's like a case of the Ugly American, but on home soil.
