You guys really got me thinking! The point brought up about the 8mb module only giving me 2mb on a 2mb Visor really caught my eye.

I think I'm planning to hold off till a few weeks before school starts again before purchasing a PDA. Given that a whole slew of new machines will be coming out, including Sony's new toy, I think it would be wise for me to wait and weigh my options.

Yes, I really would've wanted one now to fool around with and get accustomed to over the summer, but I do have certain financial constraints and I'm gonna have to force myself to wait it out.

Then again, perhaps I'll pick up a 2mb Visor now and use it for a year or so. That should give me enough time to get a feel for PDAs and decide exactly what it is I want from a handheld device...

It's all too much thinking to be doing over the summer =�

An idea that you might consider . . . get the Visor, and mess with it this summer so you get used to it. Use it as long as you can. If you find that you are out growing it, you can always sell it (campus bulletin board or ebay). I'm guessing that you'd be able to get about 70% of the purchase price. The net cost to you should be somewhere between $30 and $60.

The risk? Palm, Sony and/or Handspring release new models that force the price of a new Visor down (which would further erode what you can get for a used Visor).

Arrrgh!!! You are correct! I was thinking about the backup springboard!

I was wrong, a Visor Solo with a Flash RAM springboard has 10 megs of RAM.

I know this post may be a little late, but I decided to do it anyway...

I have a Visor with 2MB, and I have plenty of room for AvantGo, a few Ebooks, and a few small games. My space is a little tight, and I've had as little as 81 kb free at times, but I've always been able to cut out the fat and it's worked fine.

(I'm a college student too, so I know what you mean about money.)

I agree with Yucca. You can get in on a PDA pretty inexpensively if you go the regular Visor route and later decide if you want to get the more capable version - or something else that may be available then.

But by getting in now you can be learning what is available, what your usage habits are, and what you ultimately need in a PDA.

It could be the regular Visor is plenty and that a Deluxe is just a waste of money for you. Some like the idea but their PDAs gather dust as it just doesn't fit their lifestyle.

PDAs do a pretty good job of holding their value if you don't wait years. Some have managed to get almost new prices for used PDAs on ebay.

If money is not an issue, I'd always recommend the Deluxe but if tight...

Don't worry about the extra memory.

I have the deluxe, but even with AvantGo, Jfile, 5 or 6 games, and a couple of long texts (not quite book length), I am barely using 2MB.

You can always buy a memory module later to put big files on.

I'm a student too, but because I'm in a co-op program I'm a little better off and I use it a bit more. I've filled up 7.5MB at times but that's mostly because I don't spend much effort managing the memory. If you want to play around with something before you buy I'd recomend getting a copy of the Palm OS emulator. You may need to sign up as a Palm developer or hunt around a bit but I used it and my PenPal tablet to learn Graphitti before I ever got my Visor.
