Are there any industrial cases out there that would seal a PDA in (say with an o-ring)
that would be say Nema 4 or 4x compatible? It would need a clear membrane cover to allow you to pen through it. Something to make it water/dust proof.

Well, close....

But I was thinking something with a stainless steel shell with foam surrounding it. Something that would allow the Visor to survive in a factory.

Ever see the mag light flashlights? That's the general idea. Impact proof and water proof. I guess explosion proof (Nema 12) would be nice, but that requires an air supply with a purge timer before the unit turns on.

Well, I work in various factories (pulp & paper, tobacco, plywood, food, foundries, chemical, breweries, and others. Some of the them are high dust, splashdown areas, or potential explosive atmosphere (alcohol)).

Anyway, I see a potential use for the visor as a remote data entry device (ie have an plant worker enter tank levels once a shift, do material tracking, whatever). It's just that an unprotected PDA would last about a week. Maybe. It's basically a combination of the surroundings and rough treatment by the users.

Hmm seems that you should be more concerned about your health then your palms. Working in an explosive atmosphere? Jeez. Thats why I'm majoring in computer engineering. Get to sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen all day soaking up that electromagnetic radiation and getting 60 Hz headaches.

Also if you work in a factory why dont you just ask them to press you one out of some stainless steel? You would then only have to put in the foam, the locking mechanism, and a piece of thin fiberglass/plastic and then you'd have your case.

I have a degree in computer engineering :-) [and electrical engineering, I was a nut as an undergrad]. We don't all end up staring in front of a computer. Some of us have 20+ crt's pointing at us at times showing what's going on in a control room.... Then when things don't end up going right (or we need t o make sure) we wish we had galoshes...

Anyway, I may end up having to get one custom made. I was just hoping for a canned product.

Does anybody know anything about the Symbol Palm device that the Post Office is using (it was featured as an article a few days ago on the visorcentral home page)

(And I typically don't hang around in an explosive environment (at least for long) but I have done programming for a device in one. In short it's a room full of tanks that include alcohol as an ingredient. The walls are reinforced and the ceiling is built weak so that if it explodes the rest of the plant will survive, but I wouldn't want to be on the parking lot. (There are a lot of really sucky jobs out there)
