VPL Lost, Organizing Visorcentral Search Party

A bad ten day stretch: First I misplaced the Gomadic cable that connects my VPL to my Kyocera phone. Then, a few days later, I misplaced my VPL. I will say, in both cases, that the items have been misplaced. I know that they are around my house somewhere, but my wife and I have searched high and low to no avail.

So, I am out my VPL ($125), my OmniRemote module ($60), my Gomadic cable ($28), and my Pen Stylus ($12). I might add that the most important professional meeting is approaching (unfortunately before my next paycheck). Where else can I look for my VPL? How long should I wait to replace it?

It occurs to me that I am still better off financially if I were to buy another refurbed VPL, OmniRemote and Cable than if I were to try and buy an all-in-one with the same feature set (I think a Clio with a programable remote would come the closest). The VPL + Gomadic cable gets me virtually all the functionality of a new wireless Treo, at less than half the cost (also, the Treo isn't available in Maine yet).

Maybe I could organize a Visorcentral search party. I do live on the coast of Maine. Near the water. With cheap lobster.

Happy Treo 600 user, so far. Thanx Cingular for having an unlocked phone.

My Treo 600 is my phone, my PDA, my watch, and my MP3 player. Oh yeah, I take a picture once in a while with it. Convergence is such a great thing.

try inside the couch, under/in-between the cushions, that's where all the remotes and cordless phones end up and they are usually bigger..

My Prism has a nasty habit of quietly sliding out of my pocket and dropping in-between the drivers seat and the center console.

Also, look in the least likely place.. that where it usually is..

and, if you do get another to replace it, you will find it the original one the same day (this sorta thing happened with my W-2, lost the original and it was a week before taxes were due, got a new one a work after much panic , then found the original on the way home that day, it was in the glove box of my wife's car (I had borrowed her car), I had got the mail one day from the mail man as I was leaving the house and stuffed it into the glove box (of her car not mine),, I had simply forgot about it since I was in a rush that day)

morale of the story: usually things get lost due to a disruption or change in your normal routine.. think back and the location may become clear to you..

On top of the fridge is a good place to look. Or behind the night stand/under the bed. Also, don't forget to check your cradle. Maybe it's in the most obvious place.

Calculatus Eliminatus

The Cat in the Hat would say try Calculatus Eliminatus - in order to find out where it is, you must find out where it's not. Good hunting!

Hey, this just might be a good SpringBoard module idea. What about combining a memory module with a loud beeper and package it with a transmitter that acts like the locator on your cordless phone. As long as you are within transmitting range of the your visor, pressing the locator button would make it start beeping away. My almost-two-year-old loves to haul the phone around the house. When we want to make a call, one of us keeps pressing the locator button on the base station while the other runs up and down the stairs listening for it.

Most likely, I actually WLL be vacationing in Maine this year. Unfortunately, I'd probably have some trouble convincing my parents to go to somebody's house who they don't know to look for his missing Visor. Oh well.

i think the secret to finding your stuff it to accept the fact that you'll never find them. then get somebody (wife) to buy you replacements. But, she'll have to make sure there is a 30 day return policy on it all without you telling her to make sure that there is (because if you tell her to make sure than you're not officially 'writing off the old stuff as lost').

THEN, just as the new stuff arrives and you're setting everything up, the lost stuff will appear and you'll have to go through the hassle of returning all the replacement stuff which, conveniently, have a 30 day return policy!

for some reason, this has worked for me in the past.

And so my friends...

A week now, and still no sign of the VPL. This is perplexing. And so I consider my options.

OfficeMax has Visor Neos for only $99. Thats pretty hard to beat, especially when you consider that the Pro is $199 in most venues -- $100 is alot to spend for 8MB of memory.

I would consider a Treo, but the GSM model still isn't out, and the pairing of a Visor with a Gomadic cable on a Kyocera phone is way, way cheaper than a new Treo.

So I think I will go the cheap route. I now haven a proven ability to lose the damn things. $100 is alot easier to part with than $350+. But I may check out a Clie too.
