Red face Edge Springboard Issue

Howdy,

I have a question reguarding the Springboard Adapter for the Edge. I have a Handspring Springboard Modem and sometimes, when I insert the module into the Edge, It won't recognize the modem. This also happens with any other Springboard Module (like my CF Adapter). Sometimes I have to wait a few hours or soft reset and re-insert a few times to get it to work again. What's going on?

Thanks,

Mikel Felix

Howdy Again,

And I should add I'm not running anything but the standard launcher, or running any hacks.

Thanks,

Mikel Felix

perhaps you have a bad connection between the springboard adapter and edge connector? do you have another visor with the regular springboard connector to test with?

since you say it happens with other springboard modules, then i would try it with another edge. find someone with an edge, and try out the modules with his adapter in your edge. if you still have the same problems, it may be your edge.

if the problems go away, then you probably have a bad springboard adapter.

Howdy,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried out the modules on my father's Visor Platinum and they work fine. I think that it may be the adapter. Does the PCB in your adapter seem to move a little bit inside the plastic shell? The black PCB area on mine wiggles back and forth a little. Could this be the problem?

Thanks,

Michael Felix

Howdy,

I had a chance to test the Springboard Modules on my Father's Visor Platinum again and found out that when the Edge wouldn't recognize the Springboard module, I could put it in the Platinum (which would recognize it), and then place it back into the Edge and it would work. Weird! Anymore help you can offer would be great.

Thanks,

Michael Felix

Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I just got my Edge yesterday and the SB adapter worked fine for a while but then it crapped out just like yours did. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I called Handspring ASAP to find out what the deal was. They are sending me a whole new package to try out. I, too, am having problems with multiple SB's. I agree that it may be the adapter and not the Edge itself (I hope). The HS tech didn't even question the problem, he just set me up with a new unit. When I get the replacement I'm going to try the adapter with my unit to see if it works. This will tell us if it's the Edge or the adapter.

I will keep you informed of what happens.

Howdy,

Thanks for the info. I think tht I'll talk to Handspring as well and see if they can hook me up.

By the way, try doing a System Reset with the module removed, and put it back in and see if it works. I tried this and it worked once. It doesn't seem to work now, though.

Thanks,

Michael Felix

By the way...

Just to verify it that it wasn't software related issue I did a hard reset, then tried to backup the unit with the backup module, it didn't work. Same problem, Fatal Error. It seems to be the adapter is sporadically working. I can now say that it is not a software related issue, it has to be hardware related.

I really hope it is just the adapter and not the edge. I'm tired of reinstalling my software.

I already tried that too. When did you buy you Edge? Where did you buy your Edge? Did the adapter work at first?

Maybe we both received Edge's from the same batch and maybe they are defective Edges or adapters....

Well, I sure can't complain about HS customer support. I'll called last night about 5 minutes before tech support closed and explained the problem. They sent out a new unit priority overnight. I just received the new unit.

Well, turns out the problem was the Edge. All they sent me was a replacement edge so I couldn't even test the adapter. But I put my old adapter in the new edge and it worked just fine. I've reloaded everything and tested each module. All modules seem to be ok and the adapter too.

Hope your ending was as good as mine.

I'll let you know if I have any more troubles.

Howdy,

I just called them up a few minutes ago and they did the same thing for me. They really do have good customer support!

It's good to know that that fixed your problem. I hope it fixes mine!

Thanks,

Michael Felix

You didn't happen to ask them if it was a known issue?

Howdy,

The guy I talked to acted as if he had never heard of this happening before. Maybe the two of us were the only ones to recieve the 'Retarded Visors with Springboard Problems.'

By the way, which color was the one that failed? Mine was red. I got mine from their website mid May. It might be interesting if ours are similar.

Thanks,

Michael Felix

My Edge is blue. I ordered June 29th, right before the deadline on the Visor trade-up program. I never heard anything about these issues except in this thread and only 3 people have responded to the thread.

The funny thing is that mine worked for a couple hours then all of a sudden died. It will be interesting to see how long this replacement last. I'm going to put it thru the paces and try to duplicate the problem. I really think it may have been a known issue or just a faulty device. Everything else worked a-ok, just the SB's didn't work. We'll see...... I'll keep in touch if I have anymore issues.

Howdy,

I just tried the whole soft reset, system reset, then hard reset thing and that did nothing. I'm glad a replacement is on the way! I think it has to be something with the Visor itself seeing that your problem is fixed (knock on wood).

Thanks,

Michael Felix

In addition to this problem, you may want to look at the problems over at http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...mp;pagenumber=1

Looks like there are more problems then just the springboard issues mentioned here.
