Question

I know the VisorPhone exists but I like my back up module and mp3 player too much to go down that road. So what's the best (stand alone) mobile phone to use with the Visor that allows dial up thru IR & phone's modem and syncing of numbers etc?

IanP, I have the Nokia 8290 with Voicestream service. The 8290 allows direct sending of phone numbers and datebook entries to the Visor with no additional software on either unit. Using GSMTool makes this process much easier by allowing the syncing of all numbers at the same time.

The 8290 has built in IR support and I have it working with no additional service from Voicestream. I have a 600/3000 minute plan for $39.99 a month that allows me to use my 'regular' minutes for data.

I'm very pleased with the setup. The biggest disadvantage is that I have to align the IR ports. I think this inconvenience is over exaggerated, though. I can usually find a position that allows me to comfortably hold both units for extended periods of time.

There are a lot of applications out there that let you use the IR/GSM combo to send SMS, send ringtones/graphics to the phone, and connect to the internet using your existing ISP.

okay, this sound simpler than I thought. I've got an IR capable phone, but all my efforts to make it communicate with the visor leave me sitting waiting as they search for each other.

where do I start...

Does anyone know if the Ericsson T28W works well with this method? Are these phones good? I was looking at the 8290, but it is $170 with Voicstream service. The Ericsson is only $130 (though it doesn't look quite as nice).

If you read my thread below I ask about the Nokia 5190 for cable and SB connection, all of this stuff is so confusing. I haven't decided which method to go yet, so don't mind me.

EDIT:
Nothing is ever simple is it? I just found out that the T28W does not have a modem or even an IR port. You have to buy the "IR Modem" separately which costs almost $300!!!!!!! Well, that's what it costs to buy from Voicestream, but even if I found it cheaper it would still be more than the $40 extra for the Nokia 8290. I knew it was too good to be true. Oh well.
