Holy S! Handspring Admit Mistake on Edge

http://www.palminfocenter.com/view_...9&MODE=FLAT

Yep, over at PIC. Handspring has been admiting mistakes left and right. First the VisorPhone was a "learning experience," now this!

...Edge is less than 1% of the market? No wonder I can't get accessories!

sigh.

Well all that I can say is that we better be able to get a Stowaway. Most other accessories can be obtained through springboards except for a keyboard.

hmm - I read that too.

Does this mean, that we wl get a color edge soon, BUT it will be a rushed job, and not as good? like in the last 6 months they made it, instead of the last 2 years.. (or whatever the time frame for dev is)

btw - the stowaway as I know should be coming this month...

Nope. Send them an email and ask, last they told me was October.

The good thing is that they won't have to start from scratch--presumably, they've been working on a color version. Also, Colligan's comment makes it sound like they should have done something differently, but either he or Jeff Hawkins (I forget which) had said a while back that they were trying for an Edge-size device with a Prism-caliber screen. Does this mean they could have come out with that, or does Colligan mean they should have come up with an m505-caliber screen, thinking that would have sold?

Let's hope 1) this does mean that there is a color Edge-size device waiting in the wings, 2) the combination of a lithium-polymer battery and OLED screen (plus any other little tweaks they can throw in) give it that Edge size, Prism-caliber screen, and better-than-m505 battery life.

I just hope I'm not dreaming when I say that...

And the $64,000 question... can they get it together in time to announce it at [insert conference name here] this fall?

Arrow Its a given

It is a given that there will be be at least one new unit this Fall. Whether there will be a color Edge is yet to be seen. I would have purchased the Edge if it was in color...But after much deliberation, I realize that I could not go back to monochrome.

...Edge is less than 1% of the market?

Let's see a price drop to $249 or $199 and see what percentage it gets.

"Always on" internet access? Impressive. Exactly how far will I have to drive if I want to use it? It better be:
1. cheap
2. inexpensive
3. not too much money
4. not too big
5. fairly small
6. conveniently sized

I can understand the edge "mistake" - the V series flew out of stores. Repeating a VII mistake would be stupid.

That said, I think the edge has a lot going for it. I'm rather surprised as its lack of marketshare. Oh well. Anyone have the specs on the 710's market penetration?

Why is 1% of the market considered a "mistake"? I know companies that would kill for 1%. I admit I don't know the size of the market, but I'm assuming they've sold enough to cover production expenses. I'm assuming it's just because they didn't release a color model at the same time?

I also think that the 1% isn't a huge deal, I mean, really, how much space is there in the market anyway with all of the devices currently available and all those sold in the past being resold? I'm just concerned that it's not enough to get me accessories quickly enough. Man, I would KILL for an adapter at this point.

I agree with you on the Wireless, the VII was clunky & slow, IMO. If they do it, I hope they also make a springboard for the rest of us "little people." Here's my question, they're looking to integrate "Always-on" with a cell phone. Anybody know of a cell phone provider that can do that? GSM has SMS, but I don't think that HS wants an uber-SMS solution, sounds like no solution and there's no instant access to internet. I wonder if they'll have to wait until G3 penetrates the market??

i remember reading somewhere, either in a report form a speech about how handspring uses techniques to lure buyers or article, that donna or jeff said the new wireless handheld coming out sometime between january and febuary will bring more costumers.

From my viewpoint the Edge is pretty good and I'm happy with it. The things I'm waiting for in a colour PDA are just not here yet. And it's not a mistake to have the springboard module being a bit larger. I think HS should have 2 lines the Edge line for those who don't use a module all the time and a thicker line for those that do use it all the time.

I bought the Edge because from my viewpoint it was attractive robust, and the things I wanted to do with colour were just not here yet. The main thing I want with colour is the ability to view thumbnails from digital camera memory cards (SmartMedia, CF) and be able to attach them to emails and send them.

Also it would be good to have built-in bluetooth, but that also won't mature for at least the life of my Edge.

The ideal combination for me would be:

Mobile phone with bluetooth and built in mp3 (same earphones for music/talking) connected wirelessly via bluetooth to a colour Edge with built in bluetooth (no need for a bulky module attachment). And when needed I'll just snap on the adapter to use my backup module, or in near future, a MemPlug SmartMedia adapter to send emails with pictures from a Fujitsu digicam.

Would you like fries with that?

Well, you can have one or the other. There's the uproar and the ericsson. I'm sure one with both can't be far.

Hard to say when you'll be able to do that. I wouldn't hold my breath for bluetooth. I get the feeling that Handspring has something very interesting up their sleeve wrt wireless, but I doubt that it's bluetooth. As to the color, not more than 6 months for that.

THAT you can do now! Plus, you can eat fries at the same time

Umm.. Can you tell me with what software. I know I can view them, but what software do you use to send emails with the jpegs on the smartmedia card as attachments?

Ohh... um.. it depends on whether or not you can convert the jpgs to pdbs natively... I do know that bugme messenger can easily do it after that....

The inability to send true jpegs on memory cards as attachments was one of the reasons that I decided to go with the Edge for the time being instead of the Prism.

Sending a SplashPhoto or some other program screenshot with BugMe isn't a good solution. Sending 160x160 images from an EyeModula is fine, but not from a middle to high end digicam. It's not worth sending those screenshots to a person using a PC. It'll look a little bit more than a large icon on a 1024x768 screen

There has been one software out in beta already for the Palm m505 that can send email jpeg attachments using images stored on an SD card. Their authors say they are working on VFS supports as well.

However as yet, MemPlug does not have any software that accesses the cards it supports as VFS yet. Though I think InnoGear has one in beta for it's CF adapter.

With the way things are moving, I say it wasn't a mistake to include the springboard adapter for the Edge.

ROTFLMAO!

Mistake for me, as I:

-Discovered I wanted SB's in all the time
-Wasn't willing to wait for peripherals
-Had never tried color
-Had found a really good deal on a Prism here in the marketplace

I would recommend the Edge to any number of others, and have.
