Nokia and ATT?

Any success with a Nokia 6160 and ATT? If so, what cable did you have to buy?

TIA,

Tucson Sailors

Nokia works

I use a Nokia 6210 with my VDX via IR-Port. It works great fur WWW surfing, checking e-mails, syncing Avantgo. I only installed these two files from the IR-enhance package: serial/ir and serIrComm.
Works pefect.

Cell Phones that work with MarkSpace cables

Some of the information here will be a repeat of what other folks have mentioned in this thread. There's some new info here, though:

This is a snippet from the Mark/Space FAQ page. It lists all of the cell phones which are known to work with the DCH series of Visor cables.

****************************************
The following phones have been reported to work with the DCx-M9:

Audiovox 9000 + Audiovox 9000 data cable (DIC-4000) + DCH-M9
Kyocera (Qualcomm) QCP-2035a + DCH-H9 + null-modem adapter + Kyocera Data Cable
Kyocera QCP-2035 + Qualcomm PC data + DCH-M9D
Nokia 6xxx + DCx-M9 + DLR-3 (Nokia to PC Data Cable)
Ricochet Wireless Modem + Ricochet to PC cable + DCx-M9
Samsung SCH-850 + SamSung PC Data Cable + DCx-M9
Note: We have had reports where customers need to have Sprint update the firmware on the phone itself (model 8500) before it would work.

***************************

From my personal experience, I have been able to get a Qualcomm QCP-2700 to work with a DCH-6M9RTS and a Qualcomm data cable.

We are working to discover even more cell phones which work with the DCH-M9 series of cables and add it to the list. There are going to be quite a few, as the -M9 is an extremely versatile cable. The lineup of -M9 cables now includes:

DCH-M9 3' cable, powered from Visor
DCH-M9D 3' cable, powered from "far end device"
DCH-6M9RTS 6" cable, powered from Visor

I'm so glad that this thread is here! It is of great interest to me to see the success that folks have had in getting their Visors to work with cell phones.

Guessing in advance that this is a really dumb question, but here goes. do you know if one must be using wireless access to the internet to use the SureWave PQA Browser? If not, I'm on board in a heartbeat.

The nextel data cable to laptops is an RS-232 connection.
It should be possible to get an RS-232 to DB9 convertor and
use the standard visor to db9 data cable. You may have to
get a null RS-232 to DB9 connector or if you get a standard one and it doesn't work change your Tx and Rx. But either
way you should be able to use a standard dial-up ISP with
this kind of setup. I don't use Nextel so I can't try it
but if you have success we'd like to hear about it.

Using a Nextel phone with Visor

I do know something about getting a Nextel phone to work. Now here's the thing, what I'm actually talking about is a Nextel/Motorola i1000plus (NOT i1000).

You also need a Motorola's NKN6622A PC serial cable, and a DCH-M9 adapter cable from Mark/Space (www.markspace.com).

Note: You need Nextel "Online-plus" in order to get dial-up
to work on the phone.

Timeport to Deluxe

I'm using a Motorola Timeport to a Visor Deluxe via a Gomadic cable (www.gomadic.com). The cable is only 6" long and it works great (only $28). Doesn't wireless access just change everything?!?

Thanks to this discussion board, I am using a Motorola Timeport P-8167, a Visor, Sprint PCS Service with wireless web access and a cable from thesupplynet. It works pretty well. I have DSL service at home, and my ISP, Speakeasy.net offers 30 hours a month dial up included. They have access numbers everywhere so I have the best of both worlds. The only real premium I pay is the extra $10/month for Sprint Wireless Web. I was using AvantGo browser, but I find Blazer much quicker. I have no trouble bidding on Ebay using my Visor for instance! Thanks everyone.

Talking SprintPCS Touchpoint 2200

I've just recieved the Markspace DCH-M9D cable and succesfully connected my Visor Platinum to a Sprint PCS Touchpoint 2200 phone.
I used the cable from the Sprint Data connectivity kit to connect to the Markspace cable.

It works great!

Thanks to all the posts here and in other threads that gave me the correct network settings for QNC.

ehaseltine

BTW

This setup also works with the Touchpoint 2100!

Mobile Phone Connectors

Does anyone know a good source for just the mobile phone connectors? I want to make my own cable, but I don't want to butcher an expensive phone cable in the process. I know that www.gomadic.com sells the nokia and startac connectors, but I'm most interested in the samsung. Any suggestions?

Hey dudez!

Maybe someone (why not visorcentral owners) will collect all information about phones, cables, ISP used by peope and represent all of them in one table:

phone | cable | ISP | location | used software | ref. e-mail | remarks

It will be great reference table for new people.

6 inch DCH-M9D ("DCH-M9D-6")

Just interested in comments - a modification on the DCH-M9D is being looked at to make it 6" long. Seems like that would make it pretty useful for use with a cell phone/PC data cable. Another upgrade would be to remove the jumper that connects pin 2 to ground - which leads to "port in use" messages. By removing the jumper, one will not get that message anymore.

Any feedback on whether this would be considered to be a good product to make available?

This will be on www.markspace.com.

re:6 inch DCH-M9D ("DCH-M9D-6")

I for one would be interested in a shorter cable.

SprintPCS/Motorola V8162 with 6" cable made by Cables4PDAs. I use Sprint QNC and I also RAS dial into my corporate network.

Browser - Blazer or Browse-It
Telnet - Mocha Telnet
RemoteControl - PalmVNC

Markspace now makes a visor/moto cable

As well, Markspace now makes a direct cable to connect Visor Solo, Deluxe, Platinum, and Prism to Motorola phones. The price is quite low, as well!

Just got a cable and it works between my VPL and StarTac ST7860W.

Dial into my local ISP (Alltel) through my cell service provider (Alltel, again). I have almost unlimited airtime w/no long distance in-state. This way I can avoid the $5.95/mo for "Unwired Web".

I used the setup instructions from cables4pdas, and set the speed at 14.4 (man, and I was hoping I would never have to see those numbers again!). I then thought to myself, "self, you ought to try to connect faster than that", so I tried. I bumped it up to 19.2 (a slightly better number ), but the modem still connected at 14.4.

Does any body know what the limitation is here? Is it:
a. as fast as the serial port on my VPL runs
b. as fast as the modem in my StarTac runs
c. as fast as my cellular carrier can provide

The only other gotcha is that I can't have my Thinmodem + in my VPL when I am using the StarTac. Bummer, as some of the software I use online is stored on the TM+

Well, I found the answer to my own question buried back in the troublshooting section of my phone manual. Even though the phone can talk to a PC (etc.) at 19.2, the built in fax modem is limited to 14.4 This is still better than nothing, especially when all it takes is a $20 cable

Yes, I've got a Sanyo 4500 with a Visor Deluxe and the Wireless Web Connection Kit from Sprint. I have made all the necessary settings correct, but I always get "Error:modem not found(0x1106)". Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

This is a great thread.....

Now, is anyone actually using a Nokia 6160i with ATT PCS service here in the good old USA with their Visor or other PDA? I want to use my visor platinum with it....

I have seen posts that it can be done, but everyone I have talked with say they have never gotten it to work....

your replies are appreciated and welcomed..

thanks.
