Over christmas, a family member received a 'MailStation' featuring Yahoo. You can get these things from RadioShack and Target. Essentially, you get a small keyboard with a monochrome screen to allow anybody text based email and updates on news, weather, etc. from yahoo. It's pretty neat for the person in your family who just heard of email last week.

I was setting the unit up and noticed that the screen layout and appearance was exactly like the PalmOS!

After some further exploring, it's pretty easy to assume IT IS the palmOS. Everything from the font to the little folder looking 'tab' in the upper left-hand corner with the time/date/title/etc.

here's my question. Everybody keeps saying that the PalmOS can't support a screen greater than 160x160. However this unit had a screen that was 160 high by at least 800 wide (about 5 screens wide). It was OBVIOUSLY using the PalmOS. what gives? how can this company do it?

Cidco isn't included on PalmOS.com as a licensee of Palm OS, so I think it's safe to say that the Mailstation uses a different, probably propreitary OS which is very similar to Palm's.

What about that portable device that 3com came out with? Didn't that use the Palm OS? The display on that thing is much higher than 160x160. I can't remeber the name of it at the moment.

The 3Com Audrey does NOT run on the Palm OS. It utilizes the QNX OS, and has Palm compatability built in.
