Have any of you been successful connect to your ISP using the Thincom modem? I am thinking about purchasing the Thincom and would like to know if that's all I need to connect to the web using my current ISP. Thanks for any feedback.

My ISP is Verizon (dialup add-on to DSL account), and I've had no real problems with my Thincom. However, be advised that web browsing with the bundled web browser is not all that great. So I use it as an emergency only type of tool. Sites with "no frames" options tend to work well, and sites with a "text only" option (for use with lynx or text-to-voice) work the best.

The Thincom works just like a regular modem and the IP stack to connect to the internet is in the visors rom so you should have know problem. Mine works fine with my new and old ISP. I've also used it to connect to my computer at home and a BBS.

I too Have the thincom modem and it works beautifully. I even took it to Europe with me this summer and again it worked perfectly. I had to get another ISP there so that I could dial in locally and there I paid $17.00 for service for the one month that I was there.
The only time I had trouble was when I was in an area that did not have "dial tones" ie there were a few remote places that had only rotary systems. And yes I know I can configure the Thincom to go the rotary route. But I could never get it to work that way.
And Thincom did not guarantee that it would work at all over there. When I contacted them prior to my departure, they replied that it was designed for U.S. use and that it might work over there. Well I was pleasently surprised!!!!

I use Earthlink with my Thincom and it works great. YOu dial into Earthlink pretty much exactly how your PC would do it. Of course, you will need a web browser to actually surf the web and an email program to do POP3 email stuff, but the Thincom comes loaded with demo versions of each. I bought the Thincom because I have to travel for work about 3-4 times a year and hate being out of email contact -- the Thincom is just what I needed and works perfectly.

You can overcome this 'no dial tone' issue by 'Blind Dialing', which is basically telling the modem to ignore looking for a dial tone, and dial anyway.

To do so you will need to chage the modem initialization string. This is easy to do by performing the following steps:

1) From the Applications screen, choose the "Prefs" icon.
2) In the upper-right corner of the prefs screen, choose "Modem"
3) In the lower portion of the modem Preferences screen, you will see "String:" followed by "AT&FX4"
4) Change the "AT&FX4" to read "AT&FX1" instead(simply edit the '4' and change it to a '1'. (the command 'X1' in this modem initialization string forces the modem to do blind dialing).

Has anyone connected to the web with their thincom modem using Prodigy Internet?

I tried the Xircom Springport modem and returned it because of frequent lock-ups and resets. I'm now looking at the Thinmodem (new name, BTW). I just noticed the following on their update page pertaining to their v1.4 software:

- Compatibility with dial-up Compuserve hosts and other BBS's requiring 7-E-1

This got me wondering... both the Springport and the external modem I've been using seem to "hang" quite a bit both in web browsing (AvantGo, EudoraWeb, ProxiWeb) and email (MultiMail, Eudora, TGPostman). The only 100% (ok, 98% ) reliable online connection I've been able to use has been AOL (direct connect - no ISP). Since I'm using CompuServe as my ISP, can the 7-E-1 be part of the problem? If so, is there an AT modem command to control that? (I checked my USR manual but couldn't find anything and there are no such settings in the Network Prefs.).
