operating system update?

I use a Visor Platinum.
The Visor works fine for whatever I do, EXCEPT for difficulty using a modem. (It gets an error message after signing on to Earthlink).

I've had the Visor since early January.
Should I upgrade the OS?
Opinions?

Thanks,

Mike Raphael

I'm not following. How do you mean to upgrade the OS?

You can't upgrade the OS on Handspring products, they don't use flash ROM. Whatever OS you have now (I believe it's 3.5.2) you are stuck with for the life of the unit.

Yeah, I was making sure that was what he meant (in which case I would check to see if the update mentioned fixing the problem he mentioned), or if he was referring to upgrading the OS - which you can't do with the visor.

Update on Palm's site, too

There's an update on Palm's site, for OS 3.5.3, but when you install the updater, it told me that my unit (my Visor) was incompatable with the update. Of course, Palm's site doesn't tell you it's for Palm's only - just that it's for anyone running OS 3.5.0, 3.5.1, or 3.5.2.

Does anyone know how this update compares to Handspring's "3.5.2H1.4" update?

Post handspring updater 1.4 / palm os 3.5.3

'There's an update on Palm's site, for OS 3.5.3....it's for anyone running OS 3.5.0, 3.5.1, or 3.5.2.

These are palm OS versions, all hadspring versions have an H at or near the end. Has anyone used handspring updater 1.4 yet?
Is that what you're talking about, eboychick '3.5.2H1.4'
It seems to be very minor, but I'm just wondering if it made any difference (i'm in work at the moment and cant install it till I get home)

3.5.2H1.4

I have downloaded the Visor upgrade. My issue was that Palm should make it clear that their downloads are only for palm handhelds, running OS 3.5.1, .2, or .3.

Visor always lags behind Palm on their upgrades - especially for the desktop. There are newer versions for both Mac and PC that are available to Palm owners but which aren't saupported yet by Handspring. Personally, I use the most recent pakm Desktop for PC at work with no problems, though I can't for my iMac at home because of hotsync problems.

I haven't really noticed any difference from 1.2 to1.4, but I'll accept that it's there.

Palm clearly states that the update on their page is for Palm Branded devices. Handspring released that update what, 2 days afterwards?

I agree about the desktop though, that should have been out at least a month ago.

"Palm Branded"

Yes, the download section at Palm, Inc. does say that the update is for "Palm Branded" devices, but what does that mean? Palm manufactures both hardware and software. Depending on how you interpret it, "Palm Branded" could just as easily mean "running Palm OS" as "running on a Palm, Inc. handheld." Their download section is supposed to be for regular users, not lawyers or marketing types who believe the casuistic difference in interpretations is perfectly clear.

Couldn't they have said "devices manufactured by Palm, Inc." or "NOT usable on Handspring, HandEra, or any other non-Palm, Inc.devices running Palm OS 3.5.whatever"?

I mean, if they had wanted to be clear, they certainly could have. "Palm Branded" is too vague for my taste.

Anyway, the point of all this is, if you stumble across the download on PalmGear or at Palm's own website, and youown a Visor, it's not going to work for you!

Hmmm, to me "Palm Branded device" means the device is the Palm brand

Or it means the town smithy heated up some iron in the fire and branded the darn thing!

Lightbulb On connecting to Earthlink...

Hey mraphael: A while back I emailed EL about how to connect, and they sent me back a canned response on what settings you should have in your Network prefs.

I emailed it to Eugene of VC and he posted it in the FAQ - article 1108, last in the list. Now, I will admit to not having tried it yet for lack of a modem (which I intend to remedy since Amazon has those $40 HS modems), but it came from them so it may be accurate.

The FAQ mentions the DNS as "what they gave you"; they gave me Primary DNS 207.217.77.82 and Secondary DNS 207.217.120.83.

And in one of the earlier posts, you were asked if you're using ELN\username. It should be ELN/username (forward slash). That was probably a typo from the poster, but you have to be sure...

Best of luck - LMK if it works for you.

I was having trouble, and I called Earthlink. They suggested I change my login to [email protected]. I got right in. If you haven't had success until now, you may want to try that. I am using a VDX and Thinmodem+.

Unhappy WARNING Update problems?

WARNING! I installed the new patch on my Platinum and ran into problems with ThinkDB. It would crash when I would go into a database and try to modify a form. Someone over on the Yahoo group suggested I remove the patch. I did and now everything works. I contacted HS and ThinkDB but have not heard from either.

I'll let you know what they say when they contact me.

Update is not without problems

Please read this:
http://support.handspring.com/esupp...esType=RESEARCH

I use Palmscape and it also is one of those apps on the list that does not work under the latest update from Handspring. Here's the text from the above link on Handspring's site (Posted on 7/11/01) just incase it doesn't work:

Why do I see the error "Fatal Alert. BlitterWindow.c, line {xxz}" on my Visor Prism handheld?

Some third-party Palm OS programs using blitter (an Atari-coined term meaning Bit-Block Transfer Processor) graphics routines have been causing errors, such as, "BlitterWindow.c, line 1243. unlock out of sync? address reset too soon" with Visor Prism handhelds. This only occurs if you applied the HS Updater 3.5.2 v.1.4 to your handheld. Your Visor Prism is running PalmOS 3.5.2H1.4 after this updater is applied.

Programs reported to experience this problem include BugMe, Palmscape (English and Japanese versions) from Ilinx., SilverScreen from PocketSensei, ThinkDB from ThinkingBytes and Vegas Video Poker from Electron Hut.

Most of these third-parties are either working on an update of their software or have already released one recently to deal with the problem. Please download the latest version of the application or contact the support services for the application directly to address the problem.

BugMe! fixed...

Futher to the above, we have "fixed" BugMe! and BugMe! Messenger so that they work with the new 1.4 updater. Anyone affected by problems can download the latest versions from http://bugme.net
