Question

I have ordered 1 Visor and 1 Visor Dx, both graphite. I really, REALLY wanted to order Ice for my VDx, but visions of cruel GameBoy references from my coworkers kept me from taking the color plunge.

Since I ordered my Vdx on Oct 25th, it appears that I may have a few weeks to reconsider my selection. What I am looking for is the opinion of the appearance of the ice Visor, from people who have received them, and their appropriateness in a corporate environment. Is the back clear as well? Any opinions from those who have viewed an ice Visor in person are welcome and appreciated.

Well, I have a blue one, but it's 80% ice, so I'll comment on that.

Yes, the entire visor will be clear, or translucent. I've taken it to customer sites, and haven't heard one "game boy" reference yet. But then I'm not a $250/hr lawyer or anything like that either, and I don't have the Tiger Woods Springboard either.

And, if worse comes to worse, just mask off the buttons and the screen and practice your spray painting skills. You could be the first person with a aluminized visor :-).

Just got mine last night, and it's an IVD.

the front will look a little green, due to the color of the screen edges. However, it looks pretty slick, and has a nice frosted glass look to it.

I'll also point out that the colored cases are only on the VDXs, so having a colored model means that other Visor users will envy you.

Cool

Got an IVD yesterday. I've had a PalmPro for two years, and I am newly in hog heaven.

First thing my daughter (17 YOA) said was "Cool, Dad, Looks just like a Gameboy." I told her that that was not exactly what I was looking to hear.

Nevertheless, I like it very much. I also have bought clear gameboys (duh, for the kids?), phones, etc in the past. I like to look at the bells and whistles. Born with the nack. Never told when I was young enough that I really should be an engineer.

Took the IVD to the research lab today and got a number of envious stares.

My first real hurdle will be on Sunday. I use the Scripture program and the Memo Pad to read the Book during a sermon and take notes. I know my pastor already thinks I am playing with a gameboy during the sermon... Wonder what he will think now?

More to come.

46 year old doctor with pastor who thinks I play gameboy during sermons, I remain affectionately,

Well, I think I got my answer at work today. At the mere mention of getting an Ice Visor to my coworkers, they managed to resurect long since forgotten lyrics from Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby". The singing went on relentlessly throughout the day.

As much as I love the clear look, I can't endure the taunting. Thanks for all of your insight.

Oh come on...there's no need to *tell* people the color is called Ice and invite that kind of malarkey.

My Deluxe is Ice and really, I don't see how it would be 'inappropriate' in a corporate environment. It's even more translucent than I expected...you can really see the guts, you can even read the labels on the batteries. And it's true that the front has a fairly greenish cast to it, due to about 1/4" of the screen showing through all around. Hard to expain, but it's so packed full of guts that you're more aware of the guts showing through than of the color of the plastic.

I like it. If your workplace is at all technical, they'll think it's cool. On the other hand, if they're the type who are so bored by their jobs that their only diversion is making fun of anything new and different...I'd say (1) buy any color you damn well please and (2) start looking for a new job!

My coworkers are for the most part not very 'techie' and many of them have never even seen a Palmpilot up close before. They have no idea what it's supposed to look like, so they'll believe anything I tell them!

I'm a pastor, and I love my BVD. Maybe you should show your IVD to him/her before worship. You might discover another fan! I find that this thing is great; one small item, no big notepads or bulky Bibles to carry around. I can sit there in choir practice, and write a quick e-mail to the musician and the secretary about what the choir is singing on Sunday. Cool!

Mike,

What church? I'm a missionary here in Mongolia, and I'm getting ready to come home for itineration, and just ordered the Visor to start scheduling services, sure wish they would put a springboard that would do powerpoint presentations, then I wouldn't have to carry my laptop with me when itinerating. Oh well we'll just have to see.

Now the big test would be for you to use the BVD to preach from :-) Yeah, this is my Bible, and my notes :-) Somehow don't think that would go over too well.

Well, if a pastor can get away with flashing his BVD(s) (I just couldn't resist the implication!), then I should be OK with the Ice VDx. I went ahead and made the switch over the phone today.

As an aside...
When I called to change my order, the CSR could not locate my 10/25 phone order, so she had to take all of my info over again and send one of the ever popular (but rarely effective) escalation forms to shipping to make the change. She_was_able to find my 10/6 web order though, and indicated that it will probably ship today or tomorrow. I won't be holding my breath...

I DO work at a law firm and do meet with our clients occasionally (I'm speaking out of turn, but we also charge a more than $250/hr for some of the work we do...).

Got my Ice visor this week and brought it instead of my pilot. First thing out of the clients mouth was, "What happened to your black gadget?" That was the extent of it. This firm is not terribly Dilbert-ish yet and the assumption is that you're doing work, not playing. From my consulting days, though, I can remember some firms where they might wonder.

If you're in meetings with people who you normally work with, they'll know what it is.

We ordered the following Visor Deluxes:
3 Graphites
7 Ice
3 Blue
1 Green
1 Orange

They are for our IT staff, so we just let them pick whatever color they wanted.

See Ya

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We're the largest Lutheran denomination in the world. We are a partner in Lutheran World Relief (LWR).

What's itineration?

And don't tempt me! I might actually try to preach from my BVD. I will have prepared, so I won't be pulling it out of my BVD, just preaching from it (that one's for you, wgharper! ). I was considering it. On the one hand, it would be easier to keep from losing your place, especially if you used a larger font. On the other hand, I wouldn't be able to gesture as well, because I'd have to keep scrolling down. I guess I'll have to just keep it out of the pulpit, and in meetings! The confirmation class (7-8 graders) sure enjoyed playing the games I downloaded for it, when we were on the way back from a class trip to the county Youth Detention Center. Hey, anything to keep 'em happy!

The truth is, there aren't that many situations in which a lawyer will be whipping out her PDA in front of anyone, anyway. Notetaking is too slow, and business cards are still exchanged the old-fashioned way. In any case (no pun intended), you definitely shouldn't have any problem if you use a wallet-style case, which tends to deemphasize the Visor's color (much to my dismay). That is, unless the case is colored, too.

Yes, I am a lawyer. This post should not be construed as legal advice. Har har.

I agree. The Visor is much too small and slow for a lawyer to do briefs with BVD's!

But it's much too big to keep in your BVD briefs.

Question

Does anyone know of, or have, a good picture(s) of a graphite Visor Deluxe? It's the #1 pick on my Visor wish list, but I'd really like to get a close-up before I choose it over an Ice VD.

Every time I see this thread, all I can think is: "don't they know that 'pinstripe' would be the most appropriate color for a corporate environment..."

Maybe the question isn't what colors are appropriate in the work place, but what can one get away with.

Mike1in3,

Itineration is how we (Assemblies of God) raise our missions support/prayer. Some people call it furlough as well, but we schedule services with various churches, preach in those services, take up an offering, hopefully get some monthly support, repeat sunday morning, sunday night, wednesday night, and any other day we can get services. So I sure wish they would give me a full window on sunday in the week views, but oh well, you just have to live with what you get :-)

One thing, who else besides me every time you read "BVD" thinks of underwear??

My husband is an Lutheran seminary student (ELCA). I work for a large, conservative insurance company. I started with a Palm Pilot Professional. At first my husband thought the Palm was a toy--then he saw its capabilities and had second thoughts. People thought the same thing at my workplace, until so many of us have them that it's not a curiousity anymore. I upgraded to the Palm IIIx, and gave hubby my Pro with the beaming/2 MB upgrade. He loved it! He's taken it to class, to church council meetings, and to worship. The only looks he gets are from those curious about its functionality and price. I don't think the color would matter much to anyone. Other seminarians have observed just what a great companion the Palm has been--and they've gone out and bought Palms for themselves.

In the meantime, I installed Scripture and some mini-devotionals (through Avantgo.com) on my IIIx. He'd love to do the same, but cannot due to the memory limitations. We'd like to upgrade him, and are trying to decide whether to wait (and wait, and wait!) for a Visor Deluxe or to get another IIIx as the prices have come down. I even posted here on VisorCentral in the Buy/Sell/Exchange area, as it seems that some folks have received duplicate orders. I guess we'll just wait and see!
