Angry IR syncing between Prism and Windows 2000

Has anyone managed to do this? I cannot get my laptop running W2000 Prof to "see" the IR port on my Prism. Handspring Tech Europe says it can't be done until they update the software but Handspring Tech US say it can be done but can't tell me how! That's support for you.

Any ideas?

Regards

Norm

Question Windows 2000 IR Sync

I am in the exact same boat. I am no novice, and I cannot do it, and I can't see how they think it can be done - unless there is a 3rd party app that turns a Windows 2000 IR Port into a plain old serial port. Might that be what they meant?

Hi,

I have it working on my windows 2k machine.

I sent a message to HandSpring about this. They responded saying I should use a third party product.

However, I found a message at PalmGear that said you could install the Palm updater for Windows 2000 and it would work. So, I did this and have been syncing via IR with no problems ever since.

This is the url to the message:
http://www.palmgear.com/news/showne...amp;resID=11663

Hope this helps,

rick

Enable IR Port

I have Win2000, and I had to go in the BIOS (at startup) and enable my IR port. You might try this. Good Luck.

Angry IR Syncing Compromise

The problem with this upgrade is that it does not allow USB Syncing. So it's either USB or IR, but not both on the same laptop, which is what I really wanted...

The web page I found the Win2K IR updater on is:

http://www.palm.com/support/downloa...mdt_update.html

I'll repost here if this is not the correct route to go down...

Yep, the IR updater from PALM hotsync's successfully on my Thinkpad, but it's SSSOOOO SSSSSLLLOOOOOWWWWWW!!!! compared to the speed of the USB. I'm only going to use it in a pinch, I think.

!! Be careful and make a clean copy of your *entire* PALM subdirectory before you mess around in it as follows... !!

VISORWA, To get both USB and IR on the same machine, you just have to:

1. save the older USB-capable HOTSYNC.EXE (and it's .DLLs) in a different directory (or see the hint below),

2. after you have installed the IR Update, exit the newer IR-enabling HOTSYNC.EXE, and

3. run the old USB HOTSYNC from where you saved it.

Switching back and forth as I desire between the two HOTSYNC.EXE's doesn't seem to be a problem for me.

Hint: For running the old USB HOTSNYC.EXE, I just went into the backup copy of the PALM subdirectory that I had made.

Your Mileage May Vary.

Have any of you got this to work with a Visor or VxD? Two of us have been trying to do this with no success with a Visor and a VxD and are getting very frustrated. I have tried using the IrLink and BeamSync. We have got them to work with 98 but not NT or 2000.

TIA,
Brian

rickk,

Which machine do you have, and what kind of speeds are you getting?

I'll probably do this tomorrow, but I suspect I'll have to forego AvantGo synching on my laptop.

Well, it works fine for me, even though the files I installed were not exactly as listed by the writer of BeamSync stated in his readme.

Another one for the FAQ, thanks guys.

Takes forever though. Hadn't bothered unchecking backups of stuff like AvantGo. :P

Hi Eugine,

> Which machine do you have, and what kind of speeds are you getting?

I have a Prism and a Dell Dimension XPS 400 which has an Actisys IR device connnected on the usb port. I get 115200 bps as indicated by the ir icon in the system tray. I have checked this several times and always see 115200 bps.

> I'll probably do this tomorrow, but I suspect I'll have to forego AvantGo synching on my laptop.

It is a *very* long sync when doing AvantGo using a serial internet connection and an IR hotsync :-(

Cheers,

rick

Thumbs up Windows 2000 IR sycning

I am a new Platinum owner ( have both Pilot 5000 and PalmIII) Well I tried the palm update for IR hotsync at http://www.palm.com/support/downloa...mdt_update.html

Worked fine so far. I wanted to use the USB cradle in my office with my laptop replicator and IR when home with the laptop.

DO make a complete copy of your palm folder. You will need to have access to the USB hstsyncing dll's. I copied all of them into a folde named HS hotsync and shortcut the hotsync.exe to it.

You will have to exit one hotsync before launching the other. ALso, you will have to determine which one you want on WIndows startup. I chose the USB as default and will us ethe IR on demand when traveling.

Good Luck!
