I recently got a Palm VIIx and i've used the Handspring software to sync a Palm IIIx in the past on a friend's computer (i lent him the software and it worked fine). SO i thought it would just be a matter of plugging in my VIIx cradle into a serial port and clicking the 'Local Serial' on my Hotsync manager and away we go! (i sync with USB and my Visor).

But it's not working. I've tried every port and i'm not getting a response. I don't see anything wrong and i'm confused.

Can anybody suggest anything?

Is it possible to sync a USB and serial cradle on the same computer??

Do i HAVE to install the Palm version of Palm Desktop?? (this will not allow me to sync my visor then, correct?)

Thanks.

I successfully sync a Palm III on the serial port and a Visor on the USB port without problems. Local USB and Local Serial are checked on the Hotsync config.

I have the Handspring Desktop installed. Currently running on WinMe although it worked on Win98 too.

did you just plug in your IIIx cradle and press the hotsync button and it worked first shot? or were there any settings (besided checking the 'local serial')?

Thanks. I feel better knowing it's possible...now just to figure out the problem here!

another thing....when i was only syncing my Visor via USB i had my local hotsync set to com4 (unused com) now that i'm also using serial, do i need to set that to the com port my palm is connected to? (this case it's com2) i've done that and it still won't initiate a sync.

I sync my Visor via USB and my wife's PalmPilot Personal via serial using Win98 and HS' version of Palm Desktop. The only time I had a problem was when I connected an uninterruptible power supply (a UPS) to my computer via serial port; I assigned it the same COM port as the serial cradle, and when I tried to sync my wife's Palm, the UPS reported a power problem and went to battery power. Once I reassigned the UPS to an unused COM port, it all worked OK. (I think I had to go into Device Manager or something to twiddle the COM port settings for the UPS because the setup program was where I made my goof.)

I did not do anything special when I set mine up. I did not have to adjust any COM port settings.

1. The serial port was synching the Palm III using the Palm Desktop.
2. I installed the Handspring Desktop.
3. I synched the Visor on the USB port.
4. The Palm III still synched on the COM port.

I will check my current config info tonight and see if I can find anything worth mentioning about it.

to make a long story short, it was similar to what happened to you Tom.

My computer has 2 serial ports and i had my digital camera connector plugged into one of them and the Palm cradle in the other. after fiddling with com settings for the camera i finally got the cradle to work....now to take some pictures and see if the camera is still connected

thanks for the quick help guys.

once again, visorcentral members to the rescue!! (and quick too!)

Glad it worked.
(By the way, in an unrelated note, most of the team that worked on the Avro Arrow project ended up working for the Apollo project in the US once the Arrow was cancelled!)
