USB hotsynch..sometimes

I have one of the orig Visor Deluxe. I run Win 98 at home with a USB cradle and at work Win 95 with a serial. Work setup synchs fine and home used to synch fine then we put in a USB hub, but I don't know for sure if that was the trigger for problems.

At home I am getting "connection not made with PC" error message. Hotsynch button is working, but Hotsynch dialog box doesn't pop up on PC.

I do soft reset, hotsynch and Windows installs device manager stuff, but still not hotsynch but at least it does recognize a USB device. I try to hotsynch again immediately and voila hotsynch works. Then try it immediately again and it works then try it a little while later and it doesn't synch.

I have USB hub. Disconnected it. Connected USB cradle to PC directly. That didn't solve it. What solved it was soft reset then synching TWICE, but it seems temporary while cradle plugged into PC directly and poops out in a day or so. I also ran USB fixit from Handspring site. I have Outlook 2000 and run latest Pocket Mirror. Other than USB hotsynch inconsistency, works like a champ. I did not reinstall my Hacks after soft reset, but only have Hackmaster and Trek sounds.

Is this the USB hotsynch problem I hear about so much but I thought it was a WIN 2000 thing which I don't have? Is there something else I can do to make this fix more permanent since I can't figure out the trigger to make it stop synching with the USB.? Seems to be software prob to me. Thanks for any help. - Michele

Do you happen to have an AMD processor and a VIA motherboard chipset running on Windows 98SE? I had intermittent USB problems until I installed the patch on this page.

Me too!

I have the exact same symptoms with my Visor/USB. I haven't tried the patch mentioned about, yet, but I will. Come to think of it, that might explain some other USB-related problems, too.

Thanks!

Sue

FWIW, the most common symptom of the problem in my case was that my mouse and UPS would not get enumerated reliably. One time I'd boot, they'd be there. The next time, they wouldn't.

Toby et al,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back, but have been travelling. When I saw Toby's wonderful reply I thought my problems were solved because sure enough we did have that processor and motherboard. So we went off and installed the patch, but alas no joy. Thanks so much for the great help. My work serial hotsynch still works just fine so I am convinced it is not my Visor, but could be my home USB cradle and most likely is the USB, however my search continues. It just seems like the PC doesn't have a clue the cradle is trying to talk to it - there is no recognition of a hotsynch attempt. The cradle doesn't even make the little hotsynch noise I have grown to find great comfort in lately. Now at home, the soft reset with the cradle connected directly to the PC (not the hub) doesn't work so I am not sure what to do. Everything else connected to the hub seems to work fine. Harumph!

Red face Non-solution

I find that my Visor Pro won't sync on first try, but always will on second try, so I just acknowledge the error message and tell it to try again. Not a resolution, but a work-around. Good enough for me for now.

Thanks all

Sue

DUH!

I just realized that in my many attempts to resolve my hotsynch problem, after I tried the above patch and it didn't work, I then removed the hotsynch manager from the task bar so it wasn't running when I was trying to hotsynch subsequently and failing. Soooooo I don't know what fixed my problem, but I now seem to be able to fairly consistently hotsynch. In addition to the patch and everything else I tried, I just tonight tried hotsynching and while it was attempting and failing (because the hotsynch mgr wasn't running), I did a soft reset. That's when I discovered my hotsynch mgr was off.

So until the next time, I am up and running at home and work. Wooo hooo! Just thought I'd share my brain fart with everyone! This forum is a terrific resource and thanks again. - Michele
