PALM DREAMS: When Steve Jobs took back control of Apple in 1997, one of his first moves was a vain attempt to purchase Palm, and recently he told Fortune magazine "I still wish we had been able to buy it."
Under the terms of Palm's spin-off from 3Com, any company taking over the PDA-maker now would face huge tax liabilities. But those restrictions will expire in June. Former Apple honcho Jean-Louis Gassee, who last week sold his Be software to Palm and will become a strategic adviser to the company, was asked about speculation that Apple might try again to buy it next year. Gassee's only answer: "I didn't hear you."
Apple's June 30 balance sheet showed cash and short-term investments totaling $4.2 billion. Palm's market cap last week: less than $2.3 billion.
