Here's a challenge for you engineering types... a springboard to turn the Visor into the StarTrek Tricorder! I'm sure you were thinking about this, so I thought I'd just bring it out into the open. Have fun!

hey, doesn't it seem like people who are into PDA's are also into Star Trek? I'v seen so many PAlm apps that are STar Trek related. Weird. Not an insult. Just an observation.--- Jeff

Well, as for what it could monitor...lots of stuff comes to mind... Temp, barometric pressure, magnetic field intensity and orientation, different parts of the EM spectrum... This is probably far too much to hope for, but I can wish. }

Need to throw a chemical analyzer in there (chromatograph?) so we can scan the atmosphere before stepping out of our shuttlecraft. Maybe an EEG probe so we can scan our friend and announce, "He's dead, Jim."

The reason trekkers like these things is we've been watching Riker and Jean Luc wander about with those PADDs for years now. What is a PADD if not a Palm?

As I recall, it was really stupid, something like Sensor + Computer + Recorder = Tricorder.

Viacom Consumer Products actually has something resembling a tricorder, the TR-107 TRICORDER Mark 1. About $500. It has an EMF meter, a barometer to predict storms, a colorimeter useful for agricultural surveys, a light meter, and a clock/timer (in stardates no less).

Anyway, did you see the article on slashdot about the holodecks the US Army has? Just thought I'd throw that in. And of course, if we know about it, then they've really had it for what, 20 years?

Ok kids if no one accually remembers from sttng, ds9 ,or stv . The tricorder was an integrated FULL sensor package with processing , recording and particle/ signal emmiter. SO : if you wanted to get a tricorder springboard module it would have to have penetrating radar/sonar ( I am detecting a structure through that fog sir !) , Millimeter wavelength radar - detects metal at long range( my scan has confirmed that he is well armed captain), a long range EM detector ( I am detecting a power source 2 klicks away captain! ), a parabolic super high gain noise canceling mic set to detect organic noises at range - heartbeat, pulse, resperation(breathing), digestion ( I am detecting life signs to the north captain)- ( he's dead jim !!) , a parabolic thermometer set to gauge in tenths of a degree ( I am detecting a heat trail sir someone or something has passed through here recently) , and maybe just to be corny how bout a gieger counter ( aye the core cant take anymore of this captain,sensor reading are off the scale), and some advanced logging functions ( lota memory ) coupled with some basic processing functions like gauging or ploting enviornmental changes based off of sensor logs. ( at this rate sir the phenomanon will have spent through in two days )

Now thats what I am talkin about. That s how you spell tricorder.

My definition of the Tricorder is from ST:TOS, which I watched on TV when they first came out in the 1960's.

If you want a fourty year old concept of the future then we should have someone design a springboard attachment that expands that overall size and shape of your visor to that of a large (circa- late 70s to early 80s) polaroid camera . Personally I favor something a little smaller. Less in need of shoulder strap.
