Does anyone have one of this Xircom SpringPort wireless data module? How does it work and what's the performance? Is it the same speed as using Irlink with a mobile phone? I have a GSM Nokia 8290, the maximum speed from this system is 9600bps, which is very sloooow. I've used the Irlink with my phone and its terrible. the connection kept on dropping off and I have to pay $4/mo to my phone co. to have data access. I assume that, in order to use this module, I have to activate the data access, right?

I bought one of these modules & was really disappointed that it would not work with my service (ATT) I let a friend use it to see if he wanted to buy it. He had trouble with the included multi-mail program, so he stopped using it & now it works fine. You will have to activate data services to use this module. Make sure your carrier is on a GSM network!!! Sorry, but I never checked the speed of his connection. His performance seemed ok & it may have been a 14.4 connection but I'm not sure. This wireless solution is a lot cheaper than what I eventually came up with (ie visorphone) I'll post more if I get more info, but I hope this helped

Question

i'm not really sure, but i've heard from my brother in law in ny there is a possibility to get a wireless connection speed up to 38.4k over infrared and the brand new ericsson r520.

he has tried it and got a connection with 28k.

in germany this data connection is available with a service called "hscsd (high speed circuit switched data)" and a nokia 6210. im using this connection very often, price is low (10 cent a minute) and 7$ up to my phone co. it's an alternative to gprs.

with a long init string in the settings you call the phone to get four connections at the next mobile station instead of one (for speech or data 9.6 or 14.4). each connection up to 14.4k. you see theoretically a connection up to 57k is possible. the phone bundle theese 4 connections to one high speed connection.

anywhere else who has heard about this in us?

oliver
