I am now on my second Prism.
The first prism had a severe problem with reoccuring fatal exceptions that on contact with Handspring was told to replace. The second has twice during use gone to a black screen with a charged battery. I have tried the power buttons, soft reset and it remains black. Then when I place it in the charge the opening screen pops up and it works fine however all data is gone. I am using Omnisky and Avantgo but no other third party apps. Any ideas..

Sounds like the battery isn't being charged. Have you tried leaving it in the cradle to charge overnight again? Otherwise, the battery might be defective.

It makes me worry a little with the slew of people reporting all kind of problems with their Visor Prisms.

Just a Guess

My guess is that the Prism was not charged. Sometimes I put teh Prism ni the cradle thinkign it was charging and it wasn't....you know why? Because it was not sitting properly in the cradle! Make sure that the green light blinks...this indicate that it is charging.

it's not a charge issue. this happened to me last night.

i had just hotsync'd with a charge of ~68% .. went downstairs to add some new contacts and clean out some trail apps when BOOM. bsod.

the only abberation that comes to mind are 3rd party apps. i had just deleted the activesky main app(didnt del the db's) and powered down. remembering something, i picked up my prism and hit the contacts button. nothing.

popping it back into the cradle brought up the 'P' boot screen. of course everything was gone. argh.

after a *very long* hotsync i del'd active sky and all associated db's. so far so good. :b i dont remember my 1mb usr pilot 5000 crashing so often.

i have a whole slew of apps installed.

As I posted in another thread, I've had now 3 spontaneous hard resets in a week (twice while simply trying to change the brightness) and frequent (sometimes every few minutes) soft resets. After doing a complete reinstall, things seem to have improved a bit, but got another hard reset last night. I too have many apps installed, although I've had resets simply ready DOC files, so I'm not sure it's a software thing. Jasyn, tkmalan, does this sound like your symptoms? I'm wondering my unit also needs replacing. TIA.

you've described the exact symptoms i experienced. no resets of any kind in 2days now <cross fingers/>

i guess you could always uninstall *everything* and restart with one app at a time. giving a few days testing period between each new app installed. you might be able to determine the miscreant piece of software or combination of.

but who wants to do that?

which app do you use for doc files? i'm looking for one myself.

I've read, and even posted to that thread (glad FontHack's working for you Rick ). Nope, nothing that obvious. I suppose I could try installing apps one by one, but I'd be finished by, oh, about March . Tkmalan, you said you had your unit replaced. Do my symptoms sound like the ones you described to Handspring?

Rick, I use SmartDoc. Works well if you need to edit large text files. Compressing takes forever though. TealDoc is fine if you just want to read.

Update: I called Handspring. They didn't have anything very useful to suggest, but I agreed to turn off all my hacks and see if that helps. If not, they offered to replace the unit, so I'll give it a few days. Life without hacks .
