How long does it take to register MemPlug???

Start of Rant

Bought my MemPlug SM on Saturday and registered it immeditately on their website. Here it is, Monday afternoon and I still cannot download any updates from their site! It keeps telling me I'm not registered.

Hard to believe that it takes human intervention to accomplish web based registration. I've sent 2 emails to no avail. I realize they are on the other side of the world, but geez!

I'm also curious as to why they have to 'protect' firmware updates to their own hardware. It's not as if anyone can use the updates for anything else...

End of Rant

The Memplug is fully functional out of the box. If you mean PiDirect, then you have a point. The Software is functional without the code, but you cannot change directories that PiDirect is mapped to, nor can you have more than 20 programs in the /palm/pidirect/ subdirectory. BUT those 20 apps should still work.

That being said... It took me about 48 hours to get my reg code, and I wasn't dealing with a weekend like you are. I'll bet you'll get a response today or tomorrow... Just so you know, there's been a lot of complaining about the wait for the licensing of the PiDirect app. I would hope that Pi looks into this. I've seen probably a hundred different people complain about it on the MemPlug Yahoo users group already.

Although the software you ordered is a great product, I think they could save a lot of trouble if they had a purchase site that automatically generates the code instantly, or if they had a more expediant method of getting the reg codes to users. Good luck...

Of course you're right about the product working properly out of the box, but the thought of so many firmware updates between my date of manufacture and now makes me pause...besides, you know it's just seeing the stuff there just out of reach...it's like wanting a 60 cent ice cream cone and only having a half a buck...

Cheers

Angry Actually, *I* have a rant...

I purchased my MemPlugSM and registered it just fine. Then I went to download PiDirect. MemPlug's Web site said I would get immediate registration code information if I purchased through Handango instead of them, so I did. True enough, Handango sent me an email receipt with my unlock code within moments of my download and purchase. So what is the problem?

The "unlock code" that I got from Handango is roughly 11-digits long. But when I go to scribble this code into the registration page in the PiDirect application, the instructions say "Enter your 5-digit code here." WTF?!?!? I've tried innumerable combinations to no avail.

I emailed MemPlug and got a response from a gal there. Her first response to me was that she couldn't help me because I hadn't shown proof that I'd paid for mine. Fair enough. I replied to her and attached my receipt from Handango. Her reply (after I had to wait three days) was that she couldn't find my registration code in my communication to her (it was located at the bottom of our correspondence). So promptly wrote her back and now I haven't heard back from her in a WEEK. I just sent another reminder because when I go to MemPlug and fill out the Web form to have them send me my unlock code, they email me the silly 11-digit thing again! Argh!!

I am getting near the end of my patience. I'm going to demand a refund and put this in dispute with my credit card if I don't have this resolved soon.

PS: Does anyone know of any third-party apps that do the same thing as PiDirect (that's not made by PiTech)???

doesn't the software that d. Kessler writes do the same thing? I don't know if it will work on a memplug or not, but he reads these boards and will probably respond, if not, look him up on the yahoo discussion boards, (FAFilemover, I think someone please correct me)

Memplug comes with its own file mover so that is not what is needed. Have you tried launcher III?

Doesn't Launcher III only work with VFS enabled programs?

It works with all programs. The only problem is that it only works with programs and not the databases.

I use it for some of the programs I want to be able to use no matter which PiDirect directory I have open at the time.

That's pretty cool, I looked at it and didn't buy it because I thought it only worked with VFS programs - maybe I'll reconsider, I've reached my 50 file limit in my Pi directory. I'll probably also need a tutorial

I think its time to make other directories. BTW, the 50 file limit is only a suggestion, not a physical limit. At one point I had over 150 files in my PiDirect directory before I created other directories. Now I have an average of 30-40 files in my PiDirect directories for a total of about 250 in all of them, though not all are programs.

As far as a tutorial goes, try http://staff.unk.edu/s/spradlinb/visor/home.html . This website explains almost every thing you would want to know on how to use the Memplug.

You have to go to PiDirect to switch directories, right. Can this be done from Launcher? (Have a directory for Apps, one for pics, one for games)

Yeah you have to go into PiDirect to switch directories. Personally, I don't see how they can do this from the built-in launcher without some kind of hack. However, I don't see why this can't be done in Launcher III. Maybe PIT and Benc can get together to do this?

But remember the reason why it is recommended to self-limit the number of files in the PiDirect directory. When you work in the built-in launcher and you have a lot of files in the PiDirect directory, it can be slow in load the icons. Of course, if you have Launcher III, you won't have that problem.
