The new visor is a piece of junk. If you look at the hinges, cheap.. the plastic rim around the Edge, the buttons. Shake the Edge, everything rattles. Pay $399 for it? No way.
Mr Hawkins seems to be a fan of loose parts. The original visor had the SB module cover. Where putting it without loosing it. Now the Edge has 3 times as many (Flip cover, adapter for SB and cover for connector. With 3 parts to loose and two hands and only one mouth, how handle the stylus.
I will keep the VPL until HS decides to make quality again.
I own three SB's (MP3, Margi and EM2) I can't switch to Plm. Well done HS.

There's always ebay. I'm sure that there are a large number of people that would be more than willing to get those bothersome springboards off your hands. That's just my opinion.

The SB do not bother me I am using them and I am satisfied with my VPL. I guess I expected more from HS and the Edge. I will keep your suggestion in mind.

I finally saw the Edge in retail tonight. The battery was apparently drained, so I can't speak for the improvements in screen contrast and alarm volume claimed. But as far as the physical construction of the Edge is concerned, I'm surprised to say that svenopeter's right on the money. The plastic rim around the egde is tacky, the stylus and its outboard receptacle are gauche, and the hinges do indeed look cheap. I didn't even think it was much smaller -- only thinner. The height and width dimensions (at least with the cover) seemed more or less the same as a VDX, whereas a Palm V feels smaller all around.

I'm just waiting for the retail release of the m505, so I can see if the color saturation of the screen is as poor as the initial reviews claim. If it is, I'll finally bite the bullet and get a Prism instead.

Ditto Gameboy70's comments. Saw my first on in person yesterday. Thought it was cheaply made. Cover was espcially thin and flexible and easily bent. No way is this a $400 device-IMHO

Just saw the edge at Staples. I liked it. Don't think I'd pay 400 for it, but I liked it.

Screen looked *very* good. High contrast, deep black on very light grey background. Best monochrome screen I've seen. I was there with two VDX users and they imediately noticed the improvement.

No lid on the one I saw, so I can't comment on the hinges, etc.

Seemed well constructed and solid overall.

I do think my Edge is a different animal, and people either love it or they hate it. I have to say after have multiple platinums for 4 months, I do love my Edge.

At first I wasn't so sure, after carrying it around in my pocket for a week, I was convinced it was the best thing around. I barely notice it in my pocket, not a scratch on it since I got it.

I too thought I'd hate the detachable cover, and for a while there I was annoyed...it is something you have to get use to. However, when its on, it is the best screen protector in the world, it fits snuggly on the visor, and the wrapped corner prevent any dust/lint, etc from getting on the screen.

The detachable stylus was also something to get used to, not its not even an issue, you just have to learn to handle its odd shape. Sure wish it had a reset pin in it somewhere though.

I also love the recharable battery.

Its all personal preference...but I'm a happy customer.

Talking

Wow! I can't believe some of the impressions that I've read here about the design of the Visor Edge. The one that I messed with felt solid and I was impressed with the design. Frankly, it felt for more solid than any other Handspring that I've ever held.

The springboard adapter is ugly but fit very tightly to the unit; it felt like it was well-made. The screen was very clear and the processor was very quick and snappy.

Hope that all is well with everyone.

I agree with the screen issue, the screen has more contrast, however it is smaller. I think the Edge is just a logical successor of the VDL and should sell for the same price.
How can you pay 2x the price of a VDL for a better (smaller) screen and a lot of spare parts. Considering that Palm has a similar unit for decades, why would anybody buy the Edge, except for the HS fanatics. In addition there will soon be Edge connector type modules... more spare parts to carry around.
HS should move more aggressivley forward with trend setting technologies rather than copying Palm.
Quality will be the key for a successful product line on the long run. So far, Palm has the 'Edge' in that area.

The same holds true for any Palm accessories one might have. In fact, aren't most of them physically much larger than their Springboard counterparts?

I believe they are far ahead of the competition with their Springboard technology. If the SB isn't trendsetting, I don't know what is. As for copying Palm, I don't see them doing that except that they use the same OS. However, Handspring has tweaked each of their versions to add features and functionality not available on comparable Palms.

While I agree that the Edge is somewhat overpriced in comparison to the Deluxe and Platinum, the same disparity exists in the Palm product line as well.

The bottom line, in my opinion, is that end users will decide for themselves which handheld best suits their individual needs. Handspring is still selling plenty of Visor's and Deluxe's. It's the same thing as automobiles. Brand A vs Brand B... Model A1 vs Model A2, etc. Each Brand/Model has appeal to different market segments.

Where do you think Palm got the idea from?

Actually, let us not forget that Jeff Hawkins is the one who originally developed the Palm (including the V if I remember correctly). Is it really considered copying, if it was your creation in the first place?

Smile VPL screen has higer contrast

I checked out the Edge at Best Buy today. Side by side with my Paltinum, the screen contrast is lower!! It does look good. The screen has a light charcoal color against very black text. The VPL has a very grey-white screen against black letters. I held the two parrallel to each other and tried several agaist the over head lights. Plat wins. No doubt. The look and feel of the edge are great though.

Are you sure you had the Contrast adjusted correctly? The Edge I played with had nice Black text on a very very light grey background.
