It seems that the SETI servers are down today. They apparently had some hackers last weekend so maybe they're doing some housekeeping.
quote: May 30 SETI@home, the program that searches through radio data for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, was harnessed by a different breed of alien invaders, the projects leaders said Wednesday. Pranksters tapped into the multimillion-user database, made off with tens of thousands of e-mail addresses, then launched a spam attack over Memorial Day weekend. SETI@home says it has sealed the biggest security gap.
THE INCIDENT pointed up the potential pitfalls of distributed computing a growing trend in which thousands or millions of computers are enlisted over the Internet to focus on problems that require a huge amount of processing power. SETI@home ranks as the worlds largest experiment in the field, with 3.1 million users around the world.
The projects servers in Berkeley, Calif., carve up radio data from the worlds largest radio dish, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, and send the work units to volunteers over the Internet for analysis. When a computer finishes a work unit, it sends the results back to Berkeley with a user ID number and the servers send out a new unit, plus the volunteers e-mail address and usage statistics.
Thats where the invaders stepped in, project director David Anderson told MSNBC.com.
What these hackers did is, they figured out that exchange, he said. The users apparently sent a range of ID numbers to the servers and got back information about other volunteers who were linked to those numbers. Anderson estimates that as many as 50,000 e-mail addresses were harvested from early volunteers in the 2-year-old effort.
Over the long weekend, hundreds or thousands of users received somewhat illiterate e-mails from the invaders, Anderson said. Heres an example, received by MSNBC.com from a d. white:
Dear Seti@home user.
Seti@home Webpage been exploited. We have the intire user database as well all your information about you.
SEE FOR YOURSELF.
have nice day.
