i use www.blogger.com and the google toolbar....

works well and the site is never slow or bogged down (blogged down??)

I agree that Blogger is quite good for simple, free blogging. However, seasoned web designers will get bored with it fast.

If you know what you're doing with HTML, and have CGI/Perl access on your webserver, I really like Greymatter . Here's the upsides of Greymatter:
- Much more customizable
- Better archiving
- Lets your readers leave comments
- Has an easy upload function to get images in any of your posts easily
- Runs on your own server, so you're not dependent on anything else
