my questions i guess are:
1. with an IR phone, do you just point the visor beam at the phone beam dial up the ISP on the cell and leave them sitting together until you're done?
2. if so, that seems easier than the wiring method. is it as good a connection? or is it more expensive to get an IR phone? i don't know a lot about cell phones, so i'm wondering.
i've been researching the very same thing... and the way i understand it, for your visor to be wireless, you've got 4 options:
- visorphone
- minstrel, etc.
- cell phone with wire connection ala rmapes and co... (soon to be replaced by the xircom springboard and/or sixpak cell modem)
- ir enabled cell phone
the visorphone seems the most comprehensive: designed to work with the visor, it should offer no problems.
the minstrel option doesn't allow voice calls, and seems to require a specially sheilded visor, and stuff...
the rmapes style phone + cable + rs232 thing sure seems like a lot of stuff to lug around, plus it seems spotty at best.
the ir phone option seems pretty good, but so far as i can see, in the states, we've only got 2 options for ir phones: the above nokia 8290 (gsm networks only) and a motorola timeport, i can't remember which model, there's a thread around here somewhere discusing it. there are a ton of ir phones accross the pond, but here, they're tough to get your hands on.
so... i want either the visorphone or the ir phone, which would be fine, cuz i live in a gsm covered neighborhood, but i travel enough to places that aren't covered that i need the thing to be dual mode for roaming (which is too damn expensive in my humble opinion) and i don't think the nokia is (is it?) and i'm not sure on the vphone... maybe the timeport is cdma... i'll repost when i find out.
