CNET Article Greyscale PDA's are Dead?

Do you agree that greyscale is dead and color is the wave of the future? I can't live without color now - M505 - but I did give up a Palm IIIc and a Visor Prism because of lack of readibility in sunlight.
And with the 2 year anniversary of Handspring approaching - Sept. 14th when orders started being taken for the original Deluxe etc - do you think they will annouce a color unit that we haven't heard about?
Just a couple of thoughts.

Is it dead? no. But of course color is the wave of the future. If it wasn't, we still be watching black and white televisions.

As long as people can buy a very useful gray machine for under $200 and color starts at $300 or more, there will be substantial markets for gray.

Early laptops were monochrome. They lasted only about 2 years before color seemed to be the demand. Now that color units have been out for about 2 years - it's a strange correlation. No real message here but if the manufacturers don't produce a monochrome unit and force the consumer to buy a color unit - I beleive that the price of color will come down because of saturation into the market place.
Just thinking out loud.

You got a color wristwatch?
It's a curious subject. Personally, I don't see much point in a color PDA, except for maps. I'd imagine that an application that used graphs to display information would find it useful, but I'm not aware of any. Still, it's obvious I'm pretty much in the minority.

John, I used to say the same thing. Though now with a 505 and Action Names Datebook's the icons are so much easier to view and used than before. The bad thing is: I never used to play games on my monochrome device, can't say that now.

IMHO color will eventually replace all gs pda's, but not until the price of the colors come down to the sub $200 market, or until they are no longer produced. Whichever comes first. Until most of the apps support color, I think gs will be around.

On the list of Amazon.com's best-selling PDA's, the top 6 are all monochrome PDA's.. Of course they're missing a few major players (well, just the Sony's really). Almost all of the different colors of the Visor Deluxe are beating the Visor Prism in sales individually!

GS isn't dead at all. In fact most non-power users don't feel that they need color, myself included when I first bought my deluxe. One of the main reasons I have color now is that I like the readability (indoors of course) and the fact that I can display pictures and basically carry around a photo album in my pocket.

The problem is, that once you go color you can't go back. The user experience is somewhat more enjoyable, although the application of finding information for appointment, contacts etc is OK for GS. Cacheing web pages, photos etc is much nicer in color. I will buy HS next color device.

Yeah, as long as you've never had the experience you can be happy using GS. Once you've read an eBook on a Prism or played a game of Zap, you will cry going back to your GS device (if you read ebooks or play games that is). Personally I think a true black on white GS PDA would be a terrific device, but I'm not sure if you get any more battery life out of a device like that. If you don't, you might as well go for the full color unit.

I partially agree that you can't go back to GS. I think I'll never rid myself of color, at least by my own will. but I will be perfectly happy with a backup GS device.

The big factor is price. Until color PDAs can get low enough to appeal to the average user Greyscale will continue to be used and even when Greyscale is phased out of being sold it will probably be several years before the majority of PDA users have a Color device.
