I've seen Palm and Handspring owners post about getting the error

DataMgr.c, Line:8589, Index out of range

on a reset. When you get this, the only solution is a hard reset. Otherwise you'll see it every time you do a soft reset. (An up-button reset will also work, but obviously disables all your communications, etc.)

My dad got this yesterday while on a trip. He hadn't even installed any new programs.

I got to today after testing to see if CruiseControl affected Visor Prism speed (since it didn't affect the original Visors). I also saw a similar problem, although I can't guarantee it the number was identical, when I had OmniSky module problems on an earlier trip.

Obviously it has something to do with programs that run during startup, or Network preferences. But does anyone know what actually triggers the error? There are enough reports of this problem leading to hard resets on deja and google searches that it looks like something that could use an OS 3.5.3 update to prevent...

Friends,

I'd like to have an answer to this issue, too. Any help?

I emailed both Handspring and Palm support about this problem, and all they could say was that it was a memory corruption issue. :sigh:

Somebody on Deja.com at least narrowed the problem down to a specific file: The saved preferences .PDB file - if you delete your saved preferences file you should be able to successfully reset your Visor.

That's kind of a pain, but at least if you haven't hotsynced since you started getting the line 8589 error, you can double click on the saved preferences .pdb in your desktop /backup folder to re-install it, then hotsync, and you should be as good as new.

This problem happened to me when pulling out the Handspring modem while it was still connected... my Visor reset itself and would consistently throw DataMgr.c error unless I soft reset and disabled the network library. It was a great relief to find the file responsible and be able get everything working without losing my unsaved prefs!

Hope this helps,

-Andy

I'm a Windows Developer and this type of message is useless. Where is the program name? If it is coming from the OS, at least give an error code and the explanation in a technical guide.
My VB error code gives line number, routine name, and a called procedure stack.
Granted, program size on the Palm platform is critical, so a lot of character strings would cause problems. Even some numeric code with published error detail would be quite helpful. Maybe not to the majority of users, but a least they could ask their "techie" friends or post to boards such as VisorCentral.

Usonian,
i had similar problem caused by pulling out Xircom modem while still online.
the outcome is that, there is an error code of "network error, the network library is not available" when tap to PREFERENCE->NETWORK.
so i have no way to install my modem now.
do you know how to get back my network library ?
i had hot sync with my desk top after that incident. so assume the back up file in the desk top is no longer available now.
