According to (ahem) Futureshop in Canada, the Edge is being discontinued.

Not on their website anymore, not in their store anymore, so I asked and that's what the guy told me.

However, it's still on HS's site.

Any ideas what might be going on?

well, it was unpopular, and is now heavily discounted, so it seems pretty obvious that it is being discontinued.

At least three strikes against that theory:

1) It's still on Handspring's website.
2) It's still on Compusmart.ca and Staples.ca
3) The salesman at FUTURESHOP told me it was being discontinued. (You know their rep.)

Oh, yeah, one more reason: I usually find out about this stuff on VC or the newsgroups. I'm always the last to know about anything

Let's start a pot...

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. I could see it being discontinued, just recall those stellar sales figures

yeah, and with some of the package deals out there currently, it wouldn't surprise me either. It over a year old now, which is ancient in technology terms...

Plus if there really is a 'Twist' on the horizon, this would also seem logical.

Well, as an Edge owner, I can heartily say, 'Who cares?'. It isn't like there was really much in the way of support for the Edge anyway.

I work for OfficeMax and in our system the Edge is listed as being discontinued. All of the Edge-specific accessories of course have been discontinued and are on clearance.

I have noticed in the past that electronics and stationary store employees are the first to know about discontiued and new PDA models, because they have access to the stocking info on their computers.

when you're dealing with the huge kind of stock levels that futureshop and the like have, information on availability has to be programmed into the computers way ahead of time.

That doesn't matter. It's not uncommon for equipment makers to clear channel inventory first, then drop the product completely. The Edge will disappear from brick and mortar chains first.

Wrong.
Edge is not discontinued and is sold direct off HS website. A beauty design-wise and I own two: one with VisorPhone attached at all times, another as high-end remote contrller instead of ridiculous $250 "Pronto" from Philips/Marantz.

Most important to me - its METAL body blocks cancerous RF radiation when used with VisorPhone, phon eitself I covered with Aegis anti-radiation shield but Visor body doesn't need given its 90% metal body, small plastic parts dont radiate at those points (side panels).

Question

Ok. So you love your Edge. That's great. But what does this have to do with the fate of the product? It was a flop, and the market clearly rejected it. And it is now systematically disappearing from the retail channel. How much longer do you think it will be available from Handspring's web site? While supplies last, you can bet on that.

I don't know.....

According to the recent news article the Edge isn't being dropped. That sounds pretty promising. I hope. It is still a pretty nice looking machine.

Unhappy my Edge is backordered... (more)

Two days ago, I placed an order for 2 silver Edges on the Handspring.com site. the order went through. today I received an email stating that the order is "still outstanding." when I pried a little further, I learned that they are on backorder and should hopefully arrive next week. But, the handspring site still says they are in stock, as does the phone sales rep.
so, I don't know what this adds to the discussion re: if they are being phased out. what I do know is that it is very annoying to me and speaks very poorly of Handspring's service.
I am inclined to cancel the order, but I have been told by the customer service rep at handspring's 1-800# that this is hard to do and really only can be done after the order has been shipped. That makes no sense to me.
I am very dissappointed

The Blue Visor Edge is in the Clearence section of Tigerdirect.com for $169. The m125 is listed for the same price in the clearence section, while the m505 is $329 (expensive!)

They also have Omnisky Springboards on clearence for $39

That's quite funny...
Tigerdirect is selling the Omnisky modem for Visor, but the picture is the modem for the Palm V, it even has the Palm V in the Picture. As for the edge, it has a picture of it with a deluxe cradle...Personally I would be a little worried about buying anything from them, you wouldn't know whether you're getting what's in the picture or the description...
