PiDeveloper, as long as you're looking at things to put into the wishlist, how about letting CSpotRun read normal text files directly from the SmartMedia card like the axxPac version of CSpotRun can?

If it's not too presumptuous, its source code can be found here:

It is in my wish list already.
But currently I am busy in developing a more exciting application for Memplug's users.
And hopefully I will release it soon.

A little update on that whole Lexmark problem I had before, I finally came to the conclussion it was crap and spent the extra bucks to get a SanDisk. Everything is fine now!

Another great thing was that the Lexmark required the card to be in the reader for Windows to detect a drive, SanDisk doesn't. Win2k required that everytime I pulled out the card that I go through some menus & eject it or it would give me error messages when I did so. The extra $20 for the SanDisk was worth it just for this feature.

I have a Lexmark and it works great, drives come up with windows (no media required) works like a charm, but I am running windows 98se, also, however I noticed an incompatibility with EasyCD Creator 5, (but Adaptec/ROXIO software is known for causing system issues anyway) - the fix was to disable their "cute" application system tray launcher. Adaptec/ROXIO software works best when it's "dummed down" and relieved of the burden of thinking for you.

To solve your problem, simply delete some of your files under root directory with card reader or PiMover, then transfer your files to sub-directory.
eg. \Palm\, \Palm\SMFiles or \Palm\Programs

OK, I am going to try to briefly document what just happened in the hopes that someone else will find it helpful.

I followed the instructions above, and this is what I ended up with:
\palm\ - 0 files
\palm\programs\ - 0 files
\palm\programs\cspotrun\ - 32 files, 1.93MB
\palm\programs\ebooks\ - 48 files, 1.66MB
\palm\programs\gmedia\ - 0 files
FREE SPACE - 58.0MB

At this point I tried to copy another file to \palm\programs\ebooks\ and got the error "The destination disk is full, insert another disk to continue". I tried other directories with the same result. If I deleted a file, I could copy one over, then get the full disk message. Then I couldn't copy or delete anything from the SMC. Then, after more fiddling, the whole file structure came up garbled, with weird symbols.

With the blood draining from my face, I removed the card and put it into my MemPlug. Odd. Everything is there. Remove the SMC and put it back in the reader. Everything is there. OK. I create a new directory and copy 30 more files for about 1.5MB. Click on the directory, yes they are all there. SMC goes back in the MemPlug. The new files are NOT there. Argh!

Then I remembered I didn't really see the LED flash when I made and copied this new directory with the reader. I create a new DIR with the MemPlug and put the card back in the reader. The DIR is there. Copy the files. LED flashes. Insert SMC into the MemPlug and Viola! Everything is there.

At this point, I think there are issues with the Lexar reader/driver on my laptop. The MemPlug seems to be able to hold onto things when it gets them. Thanks for your help, PiDeveloper, but I think this is beyond your scope...... at least until PI releases a USB reader, that is.

I hope this helps somebody. For now I am going to do all my directory structuring with the MemPlug and only use the Lexar reader to copy files over. Another thing I noticed was that the Lexar reader got more confused the more operations I did. It seemed quite stable as long as I would do a couple of operations, remove the SMC, insert it again, a couple more, remove, insert, etc. As to the whole drive letter issue, I am using Win98SE, and I have a drive letter when the SMC is in. When I remove it, the drive disappears. When I put the card back in, the drive letter re-appears.

Memplug Problem

Do you "close" the SM card before removing it from the reader. The reader I have (a Z-mate from Dane-Elec) requires me to close the card before I remove it. If I don't WinMe complains that the media needs to be re-inserted. The software driver places a icon in the system tray to provide easy access to this. The software provides a warning that if the SM reader is not "closed" properly, data corruption could result.

Just an input. Hope it helps!

I think you can not

They should end up in the appropriate subdir. Sorry, if I misunderstood what you were getting at.

You misunderstood the request. What the poster (and I) want is the following: Suppose you start accumulating some different files on the smartmedia card, which you then want to put in a common subdirectory. Currently the only way to do this, is to copy all these files to the Visor or the desktop, create the subdirectory and then move them back. What we really want is that Pimover would give the option to see two different directories on the smartmedia card at the same time. This could be done by giving a choice whether you want to see the internal ram or something else. The moving software might have to be rewritten some, but it should not be too complicated.

No, Win 98 SE doesn't ask me to "close" the card, just removes the drive icon. It's pretty seamless. As soon as I put the card in the reader, the drive letter pops back up.

I'll put my vote in for PiMover with intra-card capability. When I started this whole thing, I wanted to move a bunch of files up one directory level, but I had to move them to the Visor internal memory, then move them back to the card in the other directory.
