I apologize for the length of this message but I want to describe the issues in sufficient detail right from the start.

First, here's my setup: I am syncing to a PowerMac 6100 running OS 8.1 using a serial cradle connected to the modem port. I have version 2.6 of Handsprings Desktop software installed. (I know 2.6.1 is available but I understand that is for Mac OS 9.x). Palm OS on the visor is 3.1H3.

I recently received a replacement Visor and had no problem syncing it the first time and thus restoring all my data and programs. I also got all my preferences back with the exception of my shortcuts. (See separate post).

However, on subsequent attempts at syncing, I consistently get the "connection with the desktop was lost" message. The desktop software keeps going for a minute or two, says it is syncronizing the install conduit, and then quits with no error dialog. When I check the HotSync log, it indicates a "failure due to error 25616" during the install phase.

I have tried a number of solutions and found that two of them work. First, I can sync if I use the "developers backdoor" by pressing the Down button and tapping the upper right corner of the HotSync screen. Second, I can sync if I move the backup folder our of my Palm User directory. Other solutions such as resets, reboots and changing HotSync setup options have not worked.

Since I never experienced this problem with my original visor using the same setup, my question is whether the sync problem indicates some hardware problem with the replacement unit. In all other respects, it seems to function perfectly. My warranty period is nearly over and I need to decide whether to keep the replacement or ask for another.

Thanks.
