Question

I saw this on palmstation.com

"{James: Palmstation has actually already ran this story on September 30, 2000. But since it seems some people never saw it, this one shall be left up to comment on.}
Carl Yankowski revealed a few details of an upcoming colour version of the Vx(c?) in a RealAudio interview at ON24. The highlights - colour Vx with SD slot in 1st half of 2001, and surprisingly he announced that the new OS (PalmOS 4.0 I'd assume) will be out 2nd half 2001"

Note the part about New OS. I don't know if the new OS will be running on DragonBall processor or not, but one thing is for sure though, Prism/Platinum will not be using it.

Question

So what's the big deal? The Palm OS 4.0 will be out second half of 2001... To a software developer, that means December 2001.

I'll just have to buy the latest and greatest Handspring "wireless, 100MHz, 24-bit color, 24MB MB, aluminum-cased, 640x480 pixel" device at that time I figure I have to replace it every year at this time if I want to keep on the leading edge.

Me too. I plan to upgrade every year if Handspring decides to come out with a new model every year.

Keep in mind that most major Palm OS upgrades require hardware upgrades as well.

Thumbs up I agree

If we were always waiting till the new OS ships before we get a new device, we would always be waiting. Whenever a new product is released, there are always new ones in development. The argument against buying 3.5 now so we can get 4.0 tomorrow isn't very realistic. I feel the new OS will be good, but good in 1 year, not tomorrow. What is available today, that is important.

Look at the list of apps that have shown incompatibility problems on the Prism. And that's just going from version 3.1 to 3.5. Anyone care to guess how many existing apps won't work on 4.0? Assuming that it's even backward compatible. The people who go around chanting the "we need the new version of OS" mantra should be careful what they wish for ... they might get it

Talking

Well, if they ship the next OS with a fast enough processor, they can just include a ROM emulator with a auto-detect feature so we don't have any problems and can wait until the developers get the OS 4.0 apps completed.

As for me, I've upgraded once a year for the past few years. Went from the PalmPilot Pro to the III, the V (quickly switched to the IIIx), then the VDx, then the Prism (to be returned tomorrow; probably ordering the Platinum just for the newer OS and faster processor). Next year, when Handspring comes out with the Iridium (metal casing; OS 4.1h; StrongARM; 16MB base, 8MB Flash; 320x320 resolution including automatic correction for current 160x160 apps; maybe color, maybe better backlight?), then I'll fork out the bucks for that too.

The "Iridium" is a fictional device and not necessarily conforming to current design specifications of Handspring, Inc. Any similarities to current Handspring developments are purely coincidental.
