What Hi-res standard would a new color visor use?

If Handspring introduces a new color visor, what spec would it use for the Hi-res screen?

I ran across the following comment at the FireViewer support board, it was posted by someone at Firepad : 'We are indeed planning to support high res palms. at the moment there are two existing and one new standards for hi res support on the PalmOS and we will be supporting at least one hopefully quite soon.' So we all know what the 2 existing standards are, the 240 x 320 b/w for the Handera, and the 320 x 320 color for the Sony Clie. So what is the new standard? Anyone have any clues?

Also want do you think the name would be for a new color visor? I thought the 'Spectrum' would be a good name. But it would be better for a visor with built-in wireless capability. It would be even more fitting for a visor with color hi-res and wireless capability.

I would think 320 X 240 which is half of VGA.

320x240 (which is actually quarter VGA) doesn't matter as much as scaling from the current Palm resolution. This means 320x320 without a soft graffiti area. Legacy that need to write directly to the screen (games) work much better.

I think that the ultimate solution, and maybe six to twelve months away, is 320x480. This would give a correctly scaled display for legacy apps and a soft graffiti area. By a weird coincidence 320x480 really is half VGA.

It could be that the resolution would match that of the Sony clie (320 x 320), but that Handspring would use a different graphics controller than Sony does.

I hadn't thought of 320x480, with a soft graffiti area. That would be nice. But I don't want to get my hopes up too high

Just to clarify...

(in other words, you probably already know this)...

the 320x320 of the Cli isn't just in color; there are monochrome models too.

I don't know for sure, but maybe they're referring to the 160x240 resolution of the upcoming Samsung I300 device (at least, I'm assuming it'll be a standard color Palm screen with soft grafitti area).

Just an uneducated guess on my part.

Hadn't heard of the 160x240. The soft-graffiti area would be nice, but staying at 160 I think would be a big mistake.

For Handspring, yes, I think so too. Now that people have seen what high res can look like, I don't think another standard color device will cut it unless it has some other whoppingly impressive feature.

But for the Samsung device, it IS a phone/PDA color screen combo thingie, so I guess it works just fine with their market.
