Question

Seeing how Handspring appears to be so disorganized with their ordering, anyone consider their return policy? What happens if in 15 days you don't like the thing and want to send it back, how do you do that, who do you send it to, how much do they refund, etc. Also, what happens *if* the business model doesn't work and they're not around for a year, who takes care of the warranty?

It's normal (but not universal) in the industry to see a 30 day return policy.

If you return a unit, you typically need to call the company you bought it from to get information like where to return it -- because this can actually change from one month to the next, a tracking number for the return (for billing purposes), and if they handle the cost of shipping, a shipping ID. On that last one, most companies do not, but I have no idea of Handspring's policies on returns.

As for the warranty, unless Handspring was sold, it's quite unlikely anyone would pick up the tab on supporting your Visor if they fail to stick around to Christmas '00. That's the risk you take buying from a startup. However, unless the display emits a poisonous gas or some such thing, I can't see Handspring being driven out of business in a year's time.

I can't believe I'm starting a sentence with these words, but...

"My CSR told me..." when I ordered my Visor that there was a guaranteed 30-day money-back guarantee policy.

There is a 30 day refund/exchange policy. Purchase cost, taxes (if applicable) and orignal shipping cost is refunded. You have to pay return shipping.

One year warranty covers any problems, except broken LCD screen, which is $75. Repair center is in Kentucky. You call Handspring customer service (not the toll free sales line) to get an RMA.

Regarding Handspring being around down the road....I'd be more concerned about Palm's survival.

As long as their quality is better than Syquest's was (of those *lovely* Sparq and Syjet drives fame), we should be fine. As long as I don't go through 3 of them in a week I'll be happy.

But then, Hayes went belly up too. But Hayes was always overpriced....

Palm isn't the kind of company that will go bust. Since they're spinning off, they will support their older models, but may not be as innovative with new ones, considering they're shifting into OS licensing.
