About the graffiti area. If you go to Handspring's Japanese site you can see the different graffiti area on there standard models too. Japanese as you all know isn't made of roman characters traditionally. You can--it's called "romaji", but it's really tedious. Think about it. "watashi no namae wa binny desu" (My name is Vinny), would take a long time to write on there. I've never seen one, but I'm guessing the stuff on the left lets you tap some kind of input select. Like katakana (foreign words normally), hiragana (native words) syllabary alphabets, and kanjii (complex looking symbols currently popular in clothing ).
I am not absolutely sure though, could be something else completely. That would explain the weird looking graffiti area though.
