Also noteworthy on this site is a Visor flip-cover. (One that doesn't require electrical tape and isn't vaporware.) I wonder if this guy would make a bunch to sell online or provide instructions to make one. They look really nice...

From what I can tell from the pictures on the site James references in his article, they colored it with Rit Dye and hot water. Apparently, if you get it too hot, or leave it too long, you screw it up and it warps.

Since it's Rit Dye, you could color your Visor whatever color you want (including the coveted purple!).

Now, if I could just get my hands on an ice shell...

What is that on the yellow Palm's graffiti area? It looks like a TapPad, but it is slightly different.

Although the Graffiti "cover" looks like a TapPad, I would guess that it is a custom inlay. Several of the other pages that are linked at that site show some very special/fancy inlays that have been inserted into the Graffiti area (by taking the LCD touch panel appart). They even show a modification that allows the Graffiti area to be backlit (Limelight). I am generally impressed by several of the projects described on this page ( http://www.fureai.or.jp/~mori-t/ ) too bad it is all not translated to English.

About the graffiti area. If you go to Handspring's Japanese site you can see the different graffiti area on there standard models too. Japanese as you all know isn't made of roman characters traditionally. You can--it's called "romaji", but it's really tedious. Think about it. "watashi no namae wa binny desu" (My name is Vinny), would take a long time to write on there. I've never seen one, but I'm guessing the stuff on the left lets you tap some kind of input select. Like katakana (foreign words normally), hiragana (native words) syllabary alphabets, and kanjii (complex looking symbols currently popular in clothing ).

I am not absolutely sure though, could be something else completely. That would explain the weird looking graffiti area though.

The hairy yellow Palm V is Magma Palm. It's an anime character(Magma Taishi) from early 70's. Click the drawing on the page to see more pictures of Magma Palm.

Re:Graffiti area--it looks like the owner has Tap Pad on Japanese OS Palm V. Vinny, I'm impressed with your explanation on Japanese writing system (watasi ha nihonjin desu ). Actually, you have to enter everything with romaji with Japanese PalmOS. Then you use one of the rectangle silk buttons on the left side of the Graffiti area to convert it into Japanese characters. It may sound cumbersome, but Graffiti is quicker once you get used to it. But if you don't like romaji there are 3rd party apps that let you write Japanese characters directly, too.

Oh Geez. Now I'm really embarrassed. I didn't realize there was a native speaker on the forum. I only took 1 year of it so far! I swear! Now I'm gonna need the next 3 years to work up the nerve to use it again . Just joking Taki, thanks for the input--glad I didn't botch it too badly. I'm only moderately embarassed in real life .

The colored cases are neat, but did you see the modified Go Type with the modem installed in it? Too Cool? Wonder if I can take a HS modem, hack it up, and shoe horn it into my Go Type? I gotta try!

I second the request for translation of dyeing instructions. More specifically - how hot does the water have to be, and how long do you leave it in there without warping it.

The Purple Visor may finally be a reality! There seems to be plenty of interest, I want one, FixItGal wants one, RClayton wants one...

Would you be kind enough to provide links to some of these applications or information about them. I have been looking for such software for some time now, but I have been unsuccessful because I am not yet proficient enough in Japanese to effectively make use of the available information.

Direction
1. Drink all the beer(laugh)&lt;only if you are legal age&gt; to empty the can.

2.Bring 5 liters &lt;I thought the can was only 3 liters...must be a typo&gt; of water to boil. Add the box of Rit & mix well with chopsticks.

3.Take Visor apart(be careful not to lose the screws). Buttons are melted on to the case. Cut the three places pointed by arrows to remove buttons. Wash throughly with detergent to remove oil & dirt on the surface of the case.

4.Submerge Visor case for about 10-20 seconds & agitate with chopsticks. Take out & rinse immediately.

This is the all direction they have on the page. No info on temp---My guess is, they followed the instruction on the Rit box. But the good news is, the shranken green case is not Visor's--it's a 3rd-party case for Palm III made by Gemini. It was dyed exactly the same way as Visor.

It's called GOGOPen. Follow the link that says "NEOS GOGOPen for Palm." But I just found out that this program works only with Japanese PalmOS...! Sorry I didn't research enough... But I think J-OS is worth trying...that's what I use Give it a try!
