Question

I'm curious to know how many Handspring users have had to Hard Reset (completley erase) their Visors?

I've been a Palm Pilor user for 3 years and have never had to Hard Reset in all that time.

Now with my handspring both my father and I have had to Hard Reset beause our units gave a fatal error and would not "Re-boot" They just continued to show the initial screen and kept cycling. We tried reseting and also reseting holding the up button. Nothing worked except a hard reset. Luckly we both use BackupBuddy and were back up and running in a matter of minutes. I would hate to think of what would have happened if I was traveling (Note: I ordered a backup springboard today!!!)

One more note.....just got off the phone with my father and he dropped his Visor last night on the table (only about 3 inches) and it someone hard reset again! I guess thats better than a cracked screen but come on.... whats up with all the hard resets!!

P.S. I love my visor except for this problem and poor backlight. (I want my battery gussling Palm Pilot Pro backlight back!!!)

Heyday

Today is day 28 for my IVDx... no HARD resets needed. SOFT ones, on the other hand seem to occur daily, but I attribute this to software as opposed to hardware.

I've had mine since Dec 31st, and have never had to hard reset it.

I have had to soft reset it multiple times, though. They all seam to be the result of conficting hacks and/or software. I figured out the bad ones and no longer use them. I never have any problems now unless I add something new.

I haven't had to formally hard reset my Visor, but it spontaneously reset and lost my data once in the three months I have had it.

i've had to do a hard reset! it sucked, but its not as bad as i thought it was going to be. lots of the programs were installed again with a hotsync. i had to to it because i had to many hacks on and i was turning them on and off all the time and i screwed up one of the linesof memory.

I've had my VDx for less than a week. Three hard resets and I basically use my soft reset as an on button (it won't turn on any other way!) After all this and burning through a set of batteries in a couple of days, and draining about 1/4 of another pair overnight with the unit off, I called HS. Another unit is in the mail.
BTW, my friend has a PalmIII that did that flickering cycling of the start screen too. Unfortunatly, she hadn't done a HotSync in a while, oops!

HeyDay;

If you keep getting fatal errors, it could mean that the visor you have is defective. You should call Handspring CSR and get a replacement. I have had mine just over a month and I have yet to hard reset. Even so, I hotsync just about everyday.

Thumbs up

I have had my visor for 2 months. Have only had to do a soft reset twice, and never had a hard reset.

Sounds to me like you have a defective unit. I would get a replacement while the warranty is still in place.

Had my VDI for two months now, daily use, and no resets - hard or soft.

Had mine since November99-a couple soft resets (from bad programs) no hard resets.

I had to hard reset a friend of mine's unit though. I don't know how she did it but ended up with a flashing "PalmOS" screen (like the one you get when you soft reset) Couldn't turn it off and even a hard reset would not clear it. Had to pull the power and let it sit over a half hour to let the capacitance fully drain.

My guess is impatience caused it. I watch a lot of people at work use these devices (Palms mostly) and when the unit is even a wee bit slow changing screens, people start tapping away on the screen-i think it overloads the processor and ...meltdown. just my $.02

I and my girlfriend had two since Dec.4, and no hard resets here. Plenty of soft resets, but my Visor is hacked around with a LOT - my girlfriend uses hers in a fashion more in keeping with the 'Jane User' out there who wants an organizer that plays Mah Jongg, and so I don't believe she's even ever done a _soft_ reset.

Cool

My green Visor delux seems to be quite reliable.
Every time I have to do a soft reset it was due to a new hack, not due to the Visor.
The one time I had to do a hard reset was my own fault. I was writing software on my Visor with Quartus Forth. And any programmer will tell you that software development is guaranteed to crash your computer occasionally.

I've had to do both hard and soft resets, but then again I'm always testing software and hardware. Just like a PC, the more you throw on it the greater chance of one program misbehaving.

Always see if you can duplicate the fatal error, and if it is in a 3rd-party app, it could be the problem.

I have my VDx since January 14, and had to hard reset it three times up to now.

Twice due to the "cycling" Splashscreen mentioned above and once because I encountered a "fatal error" whilst testing a new program. After I removed Hackmaster and the Hacks I used to run, everything seems to be fine now. At least 3 days now w/o syncing problems or "cycling" Splashscreen. I think I will wait another week or so and then, if everything still works nicely, try to re-install Hackmaster and figure out which Hack(s) are giving me the trouble.
I do not think that my unit is defective. Before trying all the Hacks, it worked all right. I used GreenLightHack, DateFormatHack, CharHack, BatterylevelHack and GermanCharsHack.
Did anybody encounter similar Problems while using one or more of these Hacks?
Comments would be appreciated as I would not have to try each of those Hacks to figure out which one screwed up my unit...

Thanks,

Markus

I am also running lots of Hacks, including Greenlight and Battery. My father does not run Hacks. I have a ton of stuff on my Visor. I'm starting to think the culprit might be OmniRemote. I'm running the demo version and every once in a while I'll launch it and it will say, "You need to install a new version" and then give a fatal error. Then I have to soft reset. I guess I can take off OmniRemote, but it works great on the Visor as far as better range.

I've had mine for four months now and have been continually testing new software
I've only had two hard resets and those were caused by Handscape.

I have been using my VDX a lot since I got it on Dec 14. I have never had a hard reset.
I have had several soft resets, during times I was adding/trying/removing new software.

I had once, but it was more than Hard reset, I had to pull the barreries out for about 3 minutes and put them back.

Unhappy

I have had to do many soft resets, as well as one hard reset. The hard reset happened at the worst time. I had just gotten home from a 3 day conference, had a lot of info on my visor, turned it on to hot sync and all I saw was the damn Palm os screen flashing over and over. I did not want to buy the backup module because I am waiting for a six pack which will include a backup module. Murphys Law. I think my soft and hard reset happens due to all of the hacks I have running on my machine. I guess worse things could happen to my visor, but the timing really stunk.

I'm running HackMaster with MenuHack and Battery Meter Hack. No problems with these. Only had to soft reset a couple of times; TinyLogo 1.0 (LOGO programming/graphics software) or PocketC Runtime was incompatible. Otherwise, no resets.
