Wasn't Handspring going to have some sort of online system that allows you to create your own CUSTOM carrying case?

Yes, Handspring plans to have custom cases available (you can also order ones designed for the Palm IIIx, since the Visor is the same size, from palmgear.com etc.)

Both are .7 inches thick

Yes. The custom designed cases are very cool. You should see it when the "full-blown" web site launches. There are three different case designes with about 10 different case materials and 20 different colors. You can even get your initials on the case. It is cool! (Kinda pricey though.) Prices seem to range from ~ $65 -- $200.

$200 for a case?!!! What are you smokin' out there? I don't even have to pay $200 for the titanium slider case from RhinoSkin. This MUST be a rumor.

Actually, I can see folks being willing to pay $200 for a custom case. I've already seen a discussion of custom wood cases in cherry, mahogony, and teak in that price range.

Remember, while most of us balk at that price, there are those who have the capital to burn.

The custom case issue is confusing to me. Wood cases? Leather,..... OK. But what about Neoprene? I dropped a Palm III and it broke and was replaced by Palm. 3 Mil Neoprene would have absorbed most of that shock, it is form fitting and fairly cheap. Any suggestions?

Check out RhinoSkin's line of cases. They do make the ShockSuit which is made from therma molded e.v.a foam. But the Ti slider may be some of the best protection available.

Then there's the Bumper case by Concept Kitchen made from rubber and plastic.

While not exactly stylish, both are cheap solutions to thoroughly protect the device. I would also imagine that both companies will come out with Visor relevant cases if the device dimensions are sufficiently different to warrant a new case design.

There are a couple other companies that make neoprene cases out there and I wouldn't be surprised if HS comes out with one as well.

I use a PalmSuit from MarWare and I love it. Like you said, it does a great job of protecting my Palm from drops. I dropped it from at least 3 or 4 feet and it was fine, all thanks to my PalmSuit! I think it costs about $25. Anyway, here's a pic:

I'm having a friend actually make me three different cases to replace the blue and ice cover mine will come with, titanium, polished aluminum, and carbon/mylar composite (same thing we did for my cell phone except for the carbon/kevlar)... not too pricey cause a friend's making it but definately not cheap. If we can keep costs down and find a demand for it we might market it to a small number of people.

Who's talking about making wood/metal replacement cases for the Visor/Palm? I've only seen limited discussion about this and a single prototype model from one of the user groups in California. Do you know of a company actually discussing true production of these cases?

We all know about the long standing joke called Palm Colors which will never produce true product despite the pretty website. Is there some reality behind these discussions?

Here is an idea...
Put a small light using a couple of AAA's to iluminate the visor on the case. Maybe using an LED (similar to those used to read books). This would save the Visor's batteries when using it in low light conditions and would be an emergency source of batteries.
