Question

Just got an 8 Meg module and don't quite know how best to use it. I'd love to be able to just dump all of my AvantGo and Vindigo files onto it, but the functionality of these two apps can be compromised or disabled if you try to move everything (the application itself AND all related data files).

Can someone give me the quick, simple down and dirty on exactly which files related to these two apps I can MOVE (vs. copy) onto the module to maximize the free space on the unit without compromising the performance of these two apps?

For AvantGo, I take the coward's route. I have the AvantGo application proper in the flash ram, and everything else in the base unit.

I basically have my programs in the flash ram and the data files in the base unit. With exceptions: I have both programs and data in the flash ram for Peanut Press books (except for the bookmark files)

The only files you can move are the ones that are not updated on Hotsync. IE, you can move the AvantoGo app to the module, but all of the channels need to remain on internal memory.

This is the biggest drawback to the module...it is all static data that can not be hotsynced nor backed up.

Right now I just use the module as a dictionary and Mapopolis map of the local metro area.

For myself, I have most of my apps in the module exept for the ones I need when I put the modem in, like Avango,e-mail and other internet apps. But don't move the editable DB's or hacks to the module, causes problems.

I'd think you'd be able to move the document file and other related files into flash each day just to read them from there AFTER you've synched/updated, and then just move the apps BACK into the unit each time you want to synch/update again... but I guess it doesn't work that way, huh?

BackupBuddy will backup the 8MB SBM (or any other SBM with flash storage - I assume that the storage space must work with FileMover, but I'm not positive that this is a prerequisite). However, BackupBuddy only backsup the last 8MB SBM that was installed during a backup session. It does not keep track of the contents of multiple 8MB SBMs.

Actually you might not have to move the files back and forth to the module, if you just keep moving the Avantgo files to the module they may just rewrite over the older files?! I'll have to give this a try!!

As Homer said, (at this time) you will not get away with syncing AvantGo channels to the module. MobileLink and Libmal must be on the Internal memory as well. I'm setup with the AvantGo app on my flash, and internally, the channels, DBs, Libmal and Mobilelink. It saves me the 290k of space on my Visor, and I won't complain. MobileLink does not yet appear to be a module aware conduit. If you find a way around this then you're walking on water, and I am a spectator.

Wouldn't that force you to download ALL channels again, rather than just update them? If so, this could make for very long Hot Synchs.

- MedScape medicine databases

What is not on my 8MSB:
- Several iSiloweb format websites that are updated daily
- Everything else, cuz I'm outta room

iSilo is very happy to read ebooks no matter where they reside.

In response to your query, and w/apologies to the original poster (and God forbid if I'm a hair off topic, eh?), but what do you say we:

STOP ALL PURCHASING OF HS' 8MB MODULE.

...and, in fact, I'd recommend:

RETURN IT NOW, IF IT'S STILL UNDER WARRANTY.

1) After all, at this point (w/a number of people developing CF Card solutions, SBs) HS' 8MB is "last year's tech";
2) Proprietary; CF is not;
3) HS has recently made it PRETTY CLEAR that they are NOT OUR FRIENDS. Poor QA on their high-priced, not-so-great-value (esp. when compared w/the early Visors) new Visors. I'll assume you know the details. Some cust. svc. psnl. are even rude when asked about QA issues! NO RF SHIELDING??? ONLY YADA YADA WIRELESS IF YOU OWN AN EARLY VISOR? (I got a rude HS cust. svc. resp. to a polite [I swear] query about this. And Yada Yada was not so hot, either.)
4) Support our own developers from the larger Visor community. I believe they have shown, w/out exception as far as I know of, they are BETTER at cust. svc., info., responsiveness ... you name the issue. And, "supposedly" (to use a sports analogy) they are only "semi-pro"!
5) While it is "not legally incumbent upon them," I don't see HS getting after those vendors who have either majorly disappointed, infuriated (you sure are right if you think I'm thinking: INNOGEAR) or even outright screwed large numbers of us, on our behalf. (While the recent idea for "their stamp of approval" is a good one [if ripped off from Palm, which is ok, esp. since JH started it], I think it's sadly high time for them to add a "Hall of Shame.")
6) W/these "semi-pro" solutions, not only does your cost-per-Mb go way up, but so does the potential limit of Mb on your device.

I doubt many were bigger fans of JH, DD and the whole HS dream when they began. But I feel we have now cut them a year's worth of slack.
It's time to strike back.

At least in this relatively minor way -- though I believe they will receive the message loud and clear.

Thumbs down bkbk, you have no idea what you are talking about

bkbk, please check on the capabilities of the 8mb flash module before you go ranting about the evils of HS.

There are major differences between the flash module and the other storage mediums, like the ability to run applications directly off the module, and the ability the directly asscess data off the module.

Heh heh.. agreed.. It would seem that it's not only Visors that need resets every now and then.

Gosh, my experience with Handspring customer service was great. They exchanged my non-shielded deluxe for a shielded one, I didn't have to prove anything other than my serial number. They told me to keep my plastic cover and stylus as spares and just send the unit back. They shipped out the new one two-day fedex before I even sent the old one in - and it arrived in one day.

I'm sorry that the other poster had a hard time. But most companies can provide good service if you are polite, direct, personal (that is, KIND - remembering that the person on the other side of the phone is human and can have bad days or even make mistakes, just like we all do), and know at least more or less what it is you hope to get from the call. If somebody is rude, my method is always to very politely say something like, "it must be very stressful to deal with so many people all the time. I really would like to solve this problem, and I'd appreciate your advice on what steps I should take."

If you still aren't happy, very politely say: "I'm really sorry, but we don't seem to be communicating well. I think it would be really helpful if I spoke to one of your supervisors."

This won't eliminate all bad encounters, or banish all buttholes from the world, but it will help you deal with them - and help us all act like jackasses a little less often.

just my opinion. try working in a call center for a while and you'll understand...
