I've seen many companies coming out with Memory modules that are as useless as a TV without a remote control. We need memory modules where we can store large amounth of applications and at the same time run those applications from the module. There is no point in having 64MB of memory in a module if we have to move those applications to the handheld RAM in orden to use them. Am I the only one who want this or maybe I'm just been too picky.

I agree with you completely.

I ended up with an 8mb module, which is a lot less useful than I thought it would be. I (incorrectly) assumed that it just turns your visor into a 16mb visor. Well, not really.

I can't sync the extra 8mbs, nor can I back it up, so I can't put anything on there that needs to be updated.

I CAN run software off of it, right? Or am I wrong about that too? (I have yet to install it.) If I can't even run software off of it, I might as well send it back.

If I can run software off of it, I guess it becomes somewhat useful. I might put an ebook or two on it, prehaps a dictionary or more Mapopolis maps.

Hi,

I also have the 8MB module and I love it! Is it perfect? No.

You can run apps from it. I presently run Noah Pro (5Mb dictionary), Avantgo, Beamware, benchmark, dbscan, diddlebug, isilofree, list, mobiledb, tealdoc, tealphone, topsecret, tyranny. I also have about 2MB of doc files.

Nice thing is if you lose power on the Visor, you don't lose the data in the module.

Disadvantages: can't edit any doc files on the module (flash rom afterall), must have sufficient room on you HVD main memory before you move files to the module (to get the dictionary on, I wiped everything else, moved it to main memory and then to the module).

Using BackupBuddy, I CAN actually back up everything on my module.

If you don't like your module and are needing to sell it, I might consider it if I can save off of retail. Let me know.

How do you run apps like Top Secret and Avantgo on the module? I thought you couldn't run any apps that need to write to databases (Top Secret) or need to hotsync (AvantGo) on the module. Did I make that up? (Or are you simply running that app on the module, but the app's databases remain on the visor?)

As for BackUpBuddy, can it restore the module as well? Or maybe that is irrelevant if the module never looses its memory.

What bums me, though, is the whole process of moving apps to the springboard. It makes it rather useless for solo users...they can't really put anything over 2MB on their visor.

I was going to put Noah on mine, but I don't have 5 mbs free to move it over. I'll have to do some serious house cleaning.

The 8mb module is the best...so far

I agree with you completely, acajigas. I think that one of the biggest limitation of all the other storage mediums, CF, SM, and memory stick is the inability to run aplications directly off the card. I'm assumig that data CAN be read directly off the card, I know that editable data can't be stored in the card.

Anyway, I just don't see the practicality of copying an application from the memory card to internal memory then launching the application. This would require: 1) free internal RAM to accept the application 2) extra time to do the additional step.

What I like about the 8mb module is that with only a few exceptions the 8mb function almost like the visor's internal memory. Since applications can run directly off the module, I used it to my advantage. I stored all of my applications in the module which freed up internal memory to store editable data that can't be stored in the module.

On happy note, a 16mb module is on the way, developed by a company in Japan. Also, people are developing memory upgrades to the Prism and Palatium. Soon I think the whole memory issue will be less hinderance.

Yes, you can run applications directly off the module, but editable data can't be stored in the module. What you can do is just move the applications over to the module while leaving the data in internal memory. The applications will run exactly as if they are in internal memory.

I've been using the 8MB module for a long time and just wanted to clarify that you can't run ALL programs off it.Trying to run some programs off the module will cause your Visor to freeze up and you'll have to do a reset. I seem to remember a thread that was started a LONG time ago that addressed this and other related 8MB module stuff. Even with it's limitations I wouldn't sell my module for cost. I use it every day. Not only do I store docs and dbs on it, I also use it to store programs I might not use every day. When I want to use them, if they're programs I know have to be used directly on the Visor I simply move them from the module to the internal memory. Then I move them back when I'm done. I would like the convenience of 16MB internal memory on the Visor, but I make do with what I've got.

Well, I did some house cleaning and managed to get the 5mb Noah dictionary + most of the local Mapopolis maps to fill up my 8mb module.

Useful? I suppose. It gives me some more memory on my handheld. Is it $80 useful? I don't think so. But, to each their own. I didn't have to pay $80 for it, so I'm not complaining, btw ;o)
