Cool

I am not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but the Omnisky modem will "work" with the Visor Deluxe. That is defining work as = provide a wireless connection to the web, i.e. surf using a browser, check e-mail with the requisite e-mail app, etc., probably even run PQAs with the OS v.3.1 PQA add-on available (from JDS or something??).

I was able to try out a friend's modem (who has a Platinum) this weekend. Upon inserting the modem you get an error that tells you to go and upgrade to a Plat/Prism, but all you have to do is click, "Ok" and you return to your launcher. Then if you try to open the TCP/IP stack it initializes the modem (without incident) and signs on. I was able to surf with Blazer and AvantGo and check e-mail with MultiMail. I was also able to do a Modem/Network sync as the OmniSky Modem registered itself as a valid connection in the network preferences. It was not possible to use many of the built in OmniSky apps, but the Minstrel app worked fine to check the connection quality, etc. Since it does not want to work on the Deluxe it does not try to install much of anything on your Visor, so you don't loose any room (save for a few small databases - I did not even notice them in my % RAM free, but I saw them in RsrcEdit).

So the bottom line is that you CAN USE AN OMNISKY MODEM WITH A VDX, YOU JUST CAN'T USE ALL THEIR SOFTWARE.

I thought some might want to know this...

(one last thing, my friend who has this modem is a MASTA - gots to give credit where credit is due...)

Since learning that a Minstrel modem would work with a VDX last fall, I never doubted that OS could function as an ISP. What I do know is that OS is unwilling to even entertain the notion of providing support for VDX owners. I traded emails with a CS rep at OS for a week, explaining that I might need a new ISP once my subscriptions eirh Yadayada was up, and that PQAs were not a concern. After going back and forth for a while, she flatly refused to extend service to me unless I upgraded.

I worry that if I do subscribe to their service I'll get no support in the event of a problem.

Wait... Theres software that lets you use PQA's on 3.1? Tell Me! Who's JDS? I searched all over for JDS or anything matching PQA with Visor, and nothing came up! Thats the only thing that I miss about my Visor Dlx and Minstrel S modem.
